I know that the archive has information on this subject, but I haven't the time nor patience to research it. I need to know the cheapest way to get GPS in the Disco. I would like something that's small with voice capabilities that won't take up the entire front seat. Any setup suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! |

I think you can get a whole LORAN setup for not that much, Antonio. It will fit in cargo area nicely, unless you purchase a used unit from an aircraft carrier. Other than that, a Garmin GPS-3 fits right in that tray on the dashboard. Voice capabilities? I can see my dog's puzzled look when I start talking to my GPS... |

The cheapest GPS is just a box with a cable running out to plug into your laptop. You could probably find one for $20-$30 on eBay. I doubt you'd be able to get a all-in-one unit that does road announcing for $400. Those tend to be twice that new. My $300 Garmin eMap has served me well for a couple of years, and it's doesn't yap at me. |

Nope. Besides... For how small the speaker is in handheld gizmos, you'd need a very sharp ear to hear the announcements

Given with the cost of Garmin III+ of about $300, I doubt it is enough. eBay's your friend |

I've got the Garmin Street Pilot III and it works great. No problem hearing the speaker unless stereo is too loud. One of the things I like about it is that there is a button to push that repeats the last instruction or announces the distance and direction of the next turn. I have seen them in your price range. When I purchased mine it was apprx 500 for the deluxe package which included all software, data chips, data and DC cords, several mounts, bean bag, etc (way more stuff than I'll ever use). At that time I saw prices as high as 1200 for the exact same package - so do look around for price comparisons. There was also a 100 rebate from Garmin when I bought mine. The only downside to Garmin is that they are not real good about providing documentation and easy to understand instructions. Garmin makes a good product but has never been strong in that area. However, they do have good customer support. I've called them several times to tell them that they "should" enable their GPS products to do _______ (fill in the blank) and each time have been told that what I wanted to do was possible and they have told me how to make my GPS do what I wanted it to do. They are also pretty good about creating patches to update their software and make their products work better. Good Luck, Jamie |

Antonio: Laptop $50 old one. GPS receiver: Earthmate + Street Atlas $100 talks to you and even listens. DRB Special laptop mount $250. There ya go $400 complete. But you will need an inverter or other power supply to run the laptop for any length of time. Dean |
