On my way home today, in the 95 disco, suddenly the car started making a loud :turbo: type noise. Its engine related because i shifted to neutral and it made the noise loder with higher engine rpm. My first thought was the fan clutch. when i got home, I tried to spin the fan by hand (engine off) and it didnt spin at all. seemed like it was locked, although it did move with a little force, but no spin whatsoever. Is this a bad fan clutch? how should a cold fan clutch and a hot fan clutch spin? thanks for any help.

Just had to replace mine. Those things are bloody expensive! Look around but don't buy from dealer. AB sells them. I should have checked first. I realize now I could have bought it from AB (and they're prices are generally a bit higher) and had it shipped up here (Canada) and it would have still cost me $100 less than what I ended up paying. Kicking my self now for not checking first.

Alan, I ordered a clutch for $129 and a fan (since I heard about them breaking, thought it would be a good time to replace it) for $71 from DAP. They had the lowest prices. What happened to Nathan? His websight didnt load. Is he still in business?
Peter, thanks for the diagnosis, i already had a feeling but it's good to hear more opinions.

Bill,

Are you talking about Nathan at Discount Rovers? I was just at his site yesterday and it seems to be working right now. Do you have the right address? I know he changed it recently to

http://www.discountbritishparts.com/

As for the fan clutch, you want to take a guess how much it is from the dealer here in Canada?? I ended up paying $400 CDN for it and am not too happy about that. That's the last time I buy dealer parts. I was in a bit of a hurry because I'm heading out of town next week so thought I'd just get it from the dealer. I've learned my lesson.

Hi Alan, in rare instances the dealer could be cheaper. I bought a set of pads from C-town LR and it was the same price as Nathan or AB but without the shipping. Maybe we Alberta folks could do a group buy or something next time to save on shipping. I come up to e-town quite a bit and wouldn't mind being the parts mule!

I'm thinking RTE group buy right now!

Yea I've noticed that before too. Some items are cheaper but it seems to be accessory type things (sometimes). Actual components I find are VERY expensive. A rear cargo matt for example is cheaper to buy from them than trying to get one out of the US but other items are ridiculously expensive (fan clutch for example). An O2 sensor is $330 CDN. I got mine for $99 US so I've had to be selective about what I get from them. In my fan clutch case, I was hastey.

Next time you're up in Edmonton, drop me a line. We should go for coffee.

Alan, my dealer wanted $280 for the clutch. I only go to the dealer in a pinch. i suppose they are cheaper if I'm buying a light bulb or something small because I save on shipping. I guess Nathan's site had a temp problem. It's been so long since I had to order rover parts (currently knocking on wood) that I fell out of the loop. Either way, DAP has good prices too. I just hope my parts come by Friday because we're expecting the first snow and the old M3 has about as much control as a drunk in a brewery.
