I'm starting to do my own oil changes, is the K&N the best or what do most people use for oil filters?? Why a long and short filter??

Use a small block Ford or Mopar filter - more capacity, more filtration media. If you change oil often - any good quality filter will do. Fram are usualy frowned upon though. Personal prefs are Mobil 1, Purolator premium, Delco Gold - OEM Motorcraft are good and usually cheap to boot. I think the K&N's are very good, but overpriced. Bill |

The K&N is a very good oil filter...and the fact that you can remove it with a wrench is nice. Like Bill said, they are kind of expensive, but sometimes you can get a good deal on 'em. I really like the Mobil 1 filter but its really hard to find these days, at least around here, they seem to have gone away about a year ago. |

I have heard a lot of bad things on Frams, that they break down easily. I used a K&N with Mobil 1 oil for a while and did not really see any performance differance between the K&N and the LR filter. The K&N did leak a bit more. As far as the long vs. short question. I always use a short. Bear with me, I am trying to remember how this was explained to me. I was told that the oil takes longer to cycle through the long filter when you are just starting the vehicle and it causes more wear and tear. If anyone can better expalin it, please help. If you can get a deal on them, I'd go with K&N but otherwise I did not think it was worth the price. Just my thoughts though |
