My 1995 Range Rover LWB was beginning to have problems of turning over very slow during start-ups. A new battery didn't fix the problem, so next on the list of suspects was the starter. I was going to remove it myself, but could not unscrew the upper bolt. So I put it back together, and was going to bite the bullet and have the dealer install a starter. But now the truck doesn't start, just clicks. I double-checked all the electrical connections and hit the starter with a hammer a few times for good measure. I recharged the battery and also tried using jumper cables. All to no avail. Any ideas, anyone? Or is it time to throw in a towel, admit defeat, call in a flatbed and schlep it to the dealer?

Thanks,
Boris

Boris,

check the connection on the smaller wire going into the back of the starter. On mine, it was badly corroded, resulting in exactly the same symptoms. Pull it off, cut the old connector, strip the wire, clean it, and crimp or solder a new connector on it.

life's been a lot slower - the Rover's been sitting in the garage for a few months now. Too busy with work and family to work on it much. Thanks for the advise about the wire. I used sandpaper on the connector. I'll try to wiggle the wire while the wife tries to start the motor.

Regards,
Boris

Don't let that one bolt beat you Boris.

it may not necessarily be it, but it was in my case. the connector was so rotten that it didn't even make sense to clean it, so i cut it off and crimped a new one in.

i hear you about live being slow - i keep thinking myself, am i being lazy or there's too much work indeed...

If it click, clicks and eventually starts, that usually a sign that it is a solenoid. We use to tap the gently to get them off of the 'flat' spot. Tapping the key on does the same thing. That is why it eventually starts.

Another idea is the ignition coil. You can have a hot battery and a ready starter, but unless your ignition coil is doing its job of really ramping up the juice from your battery to the ignition system, it simply won't have enough juice to fire the engine. This is especially true on start-up situations versus running down the road.

OK, the upper bolt has been removed! The tool of choice was channel locks. Once they got a good bite on the bolt, brute strength was applied and broke the bolt loose. The starter is now out and I'm taking it to be rebuilt this Saturday. Stay tuned for that saga!
