I have a Hannibal and after owning it and being up close with the Safety Devices, I would say go with a safety devices. I really dont like how things strap down to the Hannibal and mounting lights on the front isnt very simple, you are very limited to what you can put there and still retain the use of sliding things on from the front.

Quality and stability is great though, just some ease of use issues.

I was going to purchase a Hannibal rack and after checking out all possibilities, I went with Safety Devices. I couldn't be happier and am glad I did not get Hannibal. Safety Devices is very strong and mine is standing up to lots of abuse. I have yet to come in contact with anything that has hurt it. An unexpected bonus has been that it seems to be doing a great protecting my roof from crashing tree limbs.

I really like the design and strength of the outer rails for added protection for whatever cargo I have carried up there because they take the hit instead of cargo (tree limbs again). I know those rails are very strong because I have used them with cam straps to rig a rinky-dink pulley system whenever my pelican cases have been too heavy for me to lift them up or down.

There is no end to the tacky things you can strap down and carry on the safety devices. For example, one day I had cement quality mud in all my skid plates and found a walmart to buy a $5 garden hose and spent considerable time under my truck cleaning the gunky stuff out. I had intended to just throw the hose away - but, thought what the heck, I might be in that same mud the next day - so I threw it up top and tied it down.

I liked it up there because I started laughing everytime I looked at it. Then, Bill Burke said he was going to have to start calling me Ellie Mae Clampett and I thought that was even funnier.

Go with safety devices, you won't be sorry, Jamie

Hannibal better looking than Safety Devices? If you really like pallets I could see how you might like the Hannibal rack, because it looks as if Hannibal just threw a pallet up on the roof and called it a roof rack.

Hannibal didn't even bother to match the curve in the Disco roof, but notice how Safety Devices even lines up the mounts to the angles of the A, B, and C pillars.

very nice looking rack but i guess i should have said before that i have a rrc lwb so i'm looking for a "flat" rack. i would be one of the many in line for the rover solutions rack but as u know their curently not making any more products. so i'm lookin for a rack like that one.

If you have an LWB your probably going to have problems finding a rack. I think you have to special order a rack for a LWB from Hannibal.

Hannibal racks are pretty ugly but they work.

PRO's

Aluminum
Spreads weight over the gutter.
They already have a floor(even if it is like a pallet)
The best rack for hauling plywood or sheetrock. IMHO (maybe that goes back to that pallet fetish)

CON's

It's ugly as sin.
The pallet floor makes the sunroof pretty useless.

The rack actually doesn't look all that bad from the back. The front is what really bugs me. I'm hoping that some Hella's up front will help the look. The pictures on Hannibal's website are really bad and unprofessional. They actually make the product look worse than it actually is.

You might also want to look at the Rovers North racks.

Don't listen to Ian. I listened to him once and ended up with a dent in my rear quarter panel and scratches down the side of my rear glass!

if the Safety Devices racks are scarce, why not check out this rack:

http://www.expeditionexchange.com/miller2/DSC04598.jpg

That rig belongs to Steve Cooper from Land Rover Stuff

I think the rack is made by Brownchurch. I think that rack is really nice looking and strong as hell. It's not nearly as heinous as the Hannibal rack.

Craig,
I assume you got the Safety Device rack? But any thoughts on the Patriot vs the Hannibal rack?

This may be a stupid question, but is the Safety Devices rack considered the same as the Adventure Rack that LR sells?

I know the Adventure Rack is made by Safety Devices, but I'm not sure if
Safety Devices rack = LR Adventure Rack

Thanks,
-Eugene

Hmm, that gives me an idea for flooring.

Brian, the Brownchurch doesn't come with any light tabs. I got the galvanized version with the plan to weld various tabs and holders to it - have yet to do that - and then have it powder coated. The black version is vinyl coated which wouldn't look so good after welding.

Here's the rack loaded (over-loaded) with Pelicans and me :-)

Brian,

I have a black brownchurch rack on my 92 RRC Swb and have been very happy with it. I made some light tabs that just bolt on the rack, very easy and cheap. Garvin wilderness rack light mounts will also work on the Brownchurch, I have one mounted on mine for my rear Hella matador light. I got my Brownchurch from Roversnorth for about $650. The rack was noisy till I added some lights in the front.

If you want a Safety Devices rack on a Classic, you can always do what this Arbiter of Elegance did to his Rangie:

Eugene,

The LR Adventure rack = SD Highlander rack

However, the LR Expedition rack is a bolt-together jobby, and is NOT the same as the SD Expedition rack.

Unfortunately, SD doesn't make a RRC roofrack, nor have we been able to convince them to start, either.

Brian O,
From what's readily available, I'd go with the Brownchurch over the Hannibal. But, I can't say I've looked at lots of other RRC racks, so, there could be something else out there as good or better, I just don't know.

FWIW...

We actually just finished a couple of custom build racks for some 110s. Working on a prototype Disco rack, I'm thinking of doing production racks once I get the design hammered out. I'd throw this pic out to see what people think. (1.25" OD steel tube, CNC bent)

Thanks,

John,

If you were to comment, I'm sure it would be something along the lines of open front=plummers rack...

We're working on a removable front section, but these racks were a build to order.

Thanks,
