Can anyone tell me how to detrmine when the water pump needs replacement? Recently I've been getting an intermittent "whirring" sound at idle. When I throttle up it goes away. Some have said its the water pump beginning to fail. Others say it's the idler pulley. Is there a test for this or do I just wait until I'm stranded. My truck is a 99 Disco II with 97K on the clock. |

Test is simple - grab some metal long object (crowbar will do) and put it on the top of pulley assembly, and then on top of water pump while this whining occurs. Put another end of it next to your ear. You will feel/hear where whirring actually going on. (for me it was water pump.. Exact same stuff as you getting)

Is this a fairly simple procedure or does it take a lot to access the water pump as you describe? |

water pump is thingy right where your beltdriven fan attached to So you just open yer hood, and its there. Same as pulley - there too. Or you mean to replace? Replacing is easy itself, except for part where you have to get old gasket off - thats pain in rear end.. But if you patient then its pretty easy job - drain coolant, take belt off, take fan off, unbolt about 12 bolts (3 on pulley, 9 on pump itself) and its popping out - probably with little help from your friendly hammer...Then gasket fun starts, and then you just assemble it all back and put new coolant in. |
