Hello,

what are the best diff guards out there ? cost-performance wise ...

I was recommended QT Services guards, any other good ones ?

Thank you.

I have safariguard and think they are great for the front, I also have one on the rear, but if I were to do again the QT would be on the back with the pinion guard.

Another option is the diff guards that RoverTym is currently working on.

We talked about two weeks ago and John (I think) told me he was working on a design and would have some available in the near future. He quoted me about $150 for the a pair. But don't quote me on that for a final price.

Anyway, just FYI for you. I'm also in the market for some diff guards and are anxious to see what RoverTym comes up with. Plus I'm in Richmond.

Marc,

Can you post some pics of your diff guards? If your diff guards look as nice as your sliders, I'd be very curious to check them out.

I have a set from Thatched Roof Garage. They are pretty beefy, and double hex bolted at the top.

I'll vote for those Red Rock Rover diff guards too. I watched Marc drop the entire weight of the front of his D1, from about 6-12", onto his front guard. He started going up a boulder on his left front tire, the boulder rolled out from under the tire, then bam! Down it came, no damage other than some powder coat scratches. I then watched him slide on the diff guard till he got the wheels to the ground again. Never went loose and did a great job of protecting the diff.

Has anyone seen the Rovertym guards yet? Steve had said at MAR they would be a weld on type. Just wondering about a finish. If it is powder coated you would have to grind off the coating to weld it on. I'm sure they will be bullit proof, like everything else Steve sells. Just wondering about the look. As if it will stay pretty for long.

Don't hit them on anything and they will stay pretty forever. :-)

ok, so i'm a little slow with the pictures. just got a new MAC and haven't had time to load everything back up.
here's a quick shot of the front and rear diffs.
both double bolted 3/16 steel w/ plasma cut name powdercoated matte black. we likes the $G look but hated the way they were fastened, the single top bolt never gave a solid attachment. we also thought the 1/8" strap was flimsy, so we went 3/16" with everything.
what ya'll think?

oh,
here's a shot of the diff guard that andy was talking about. took a good hit and only lost a little coating.
(the quick rust is due in part to the wet salty roads in utah). maybe one of these days i'll be get some free time to recoat? guess the cobblers kids will still go barefoot.

I still like my Mantec diff guards. At 6mm = 1/4" steel, I think they're a little stronger than most.

I have Dee's diff gaurds

diff g1

diff g

they are made of stamped 1/4" and the welds are nothing but perfect.the coating also seams to be hard as the rocks they have bashed. the gaurds have proven to take a really hard blow without any sign of failure or comming loose.

I believe the key to keeping the band type from going away on the trail is how they are put on. by tightening the inside (closer to housing) bolt more then the outer one the band takes a cone shape that will slighly crush the housing making it impossible for the gaurd to be pulled off. I have had mine on and dragged it over and ran it into shit for along time now and they still are both down there. also I would not use nylocks, nylocks dont do well under vehichles, they tend to fail after they have spent too much time 12" inches over sweltering hot asphalt. I learned this from a friend that owns a truck leaf spring company. he said when they first showed up in the 70's they tried them and it didnt take to long to see the heat of hot roads was detramental to nylocks. I have not used them under any of my trucks because of this advice.I have a self locking knot as a jam nut on mine.

I would buy them again in an instant:-)

Tony,
any of the Redrock products can be purchased from Great Basin Rover. just tell Bill you saw me blabbn' about them on the net.
i no longer deal with retail directly. (paper work etc...not really my thing). and no they won't fit a D2.

come on John, let me have it!!!!
yeah they are not the most (how do you put)
"elegant" but they seem to get the job done for now. i personally lean towards the "sewer cap" fix but that seems to scare most people.
as i'm sure you are shivering at the mere thought of it. give me your best.

Marc,

Can you add 2 very subtle bumps to your front diff guard, just below the top edge, to approximate nipples at just below room temperature?

The trouble with the band-type diff guards is they provide zero protection on the bottom of your axle. I slid off an obstacle at Moab this year and the only thing touching rock was my axles.

I dragged the truck off the rock and the QT sliders showed only scuff marks. With the band-type, the sheetmetal differential housing takes the full weight of the vehicle with no support from the slider.

I have yet to see anything as stout. 1/4" cadmium plated steel throughout.

You have a website and a price on the QT guard in the picture above? I really like the driveline/pinion protection.

Yup, DiscountRovers carries them. I bought mine from Nathan. They're about $150 for the rear one and $229 for both front and rear. Matt I bought the rear one from Nathan mainly because of the pinion protection. I like that design a lot plus it won't fall off.

I got mine from Northwestparts.com They're in Portland, Ore which is close to the border and costs less to ship to western Canada.
The QT site is www.qtservices.co.uk

They use the existing mounting holes on your third member and included brackets. The front requires welding two small tabs on the front of the housing. I did it with a home mig and no problems. A muffler shop could stick them on in 10 minutes. If you sell the truck w/o sliders, or want to move them, just file off the welding burrs and you're good to go.

$150, OUCH! I guess it's better to spend the 150, rather than cursing at yourself on the trail for not. Sure does look like a strong quality guard.

Oh, yah. Is there another place that sells just the third member guard (besides Rockware, I want to look around and see my choices)? I have a new set of Thatched Roof Garage diff guards front and rear. I don't want to replace a new guard completely. Maybe I could weld the two together, hmmmm? That wouldn't be too hard at all with some extra stock.

Duh, I might as well fabricate one myself and match up some bolts to fit the holes on the third member. Whahoo, my next project!

Talk to Great Basin Rovers, Red Rock makes a pinon guard that is seperate from the diff guard for the front and rear. Bomber stuff. The Red Rock diff guards are quite different to those DAPS. You can't tell by those pictures above but they are kind of V shaped in the middle.

Bill really needs his page updated. it's pathetic how much stuff he has for sale that most of us don't know about.

I have Southdown diff guards. (In fact, they were the first set of Southdown guards sold in the States for the D2 because the distributor is a salesman at the dealer I bought from - Paul Miller LR in Parsippany NJ.)

These Diff Guards have done the job over the years, taking a real beating and done their job well.
