Jeff, I was thinking to get the same thing. I also found that GPScity has similar devices and then you buy whichever software you like. But I think the other devices only work with the Delorme software. http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/0314.1.3446703476949504853/laptopgps.html And they also have these bluetooth wireless ones too: http://www.gpscity.com/gps/brados/0314.3.2984779877449504853/bluetoothgps.html Anyone have any info on any of these options? For an internal antena it does a pretty good job. For example it doesn't loose signal for a whole day in the pine barrens. But I think there are cheaper and equally good receivers out there. |

I'm using Topo 4 with the USB Earthmate. Quick acquisition compared to the earlier 9-pin COM port version. WAAS seems to enable a faster cold start too. It seems to be mostly glitch-free, although it has a hard time re-acquiring at 65mph or faster. The Topo 4 is good as far as I'm concerned - though lots of new streets are missing after two years on the shelf. It would be nice if Delorme offered some dataset updates between versions of the program. e |

Dean, I know you were looking for laptop mounts. What do you use for GPS? |

I have the Delorme Earthmate USB GPS receiver. Worked good for me. I still have to score me the Topo software that has the 3D display. Sounds pretty cool. I use the Street Atlas 2003 (came with it) on a Sony VAIO laptop. The display is good, the voice command is rather cheesy but I guess it's okay. All in all it's pretty good as Erik Olson posted above. The only complaint is, if you don't have a proper laptop mount, it could be a bit cumbersome and a royal PITA. Glenn |
