I currently have all my belts and the fan unit off my 89 RR and noticed that the engine mounts are falling apart. I have tried to find out details of changing in the Haynes and Shop Manual with on luck for a DIY. How difficult are the engine mounts to replace and any suggestions?
Thanks,
Michael

Michael, I have never changed the engine mounts on my Rovers but have done them on other vehicles (last time was on my CJ7). I used two jacks (one to support the engine and one between the engine and the frame. I used a scissor jack between the engine and the frame (to align the holes). I can't imagine it being that difficult on the Rangie.

Good luck and keep us posted.

John

I do have both a floor and scissor jack. What is a suitable location for supporting the engine? I really want to make sure that I do not damage anything.
Thanks,
Michael

I think I used a piece of 2x4 under the oil pan on the Jeep. I'm not sure if it's a good idea on the Rangie. I would have to check on my Rangie and see where would be the best spot to jack the engine up.

Years ago (20 or more) I was replacing the head gasket on a 1970 CJ5 I owned and I could'nt remove the head off the 4 cyl Hurricane engine, what I did was grabbed the winch cable and threw it over a large branch and hooked it up to the engine (to a loop that was on the engine made to lift it), put the Warn 8274 in reverse and voila.... head came off. I'm guessing you could do something similar if you don't want to jack up the engine from underneath (if you have a winch of course). Just a thought...

Chock wheels. Use a bottle jack and 4 or 5 4x4s to to give it some height - i criss crossed stacks on the bottom couple. Raise the bottle jack up to the harmonic balancer on the front of the engine until it is snug. Loosen the fan shroud and pull back an inch or two to allow the fan clearance when the engine goes up. Loosen the fixings on the lower mounts and remove them on the upper side one at a time. I used an air ratchet and a socket driver to crank the bottle jack - saves a ton of time from winding, winding... crank it up, one side will go up a ways before you can get it out- go a bit further because the old one is sure to bent from use and the new one will be "longer" to get in there. Replace bad mount, lower, fix nuts, lather, drink beer, repeat.
