I have an ARB on my D2. I love it, but know 2 people with mantecs who love them. As far as im concerned, they both work great so it comes down to looks and installation. It was fairly easy to install my ARB, im not sure about the mantec.

The ARB install is much more involved on the D1 than on the D2. If I had to do it over again, I would have gone with Mantec. It's a cleaner install on the D1.

Whatever you like the look / $$$ of most. That's all you have to consider. They are both fine.

It's not quite that simple on the D1, Dean. On the D2, the install of Mantec and ARB are fairly similar. On the D1, it's a different story.

The Mantec goes through the fender by the windsrcreen, and runs between the outer an inner fender just like on the D2. It then uses an existing hole in the inner wall (covered by a big rubber plug) up front by the storage space for the jack, and connects to the airbox with a flexible hose.

The ARB on the other hand, runs on the outside of the fender, and requires you to cut a hole through the fender, then run an s shaped plastic tube through the inner wall. You have to cut a new hole to the inner wall for this tube, then you have to cut another hole in the side of the airbox, take the trumpet off, plug the hole where the trumped was, and relocate the airbox 2-3 inches away from the inner wall in order to fit the s shaped tube. You also have to relocate the alarm switch for the hood, and shorten the airhose running to the plenum. You will also most likely find that the relocation hardware supplied, which appears to be for a 3.9 don't fit exactly right for a 4.0, and that the MAF is right up against the dipstick after you have relocated everything.

There is a lot of cursing involved in an ARB install, but it kinda works in the end.

The Mantec install does not require anything to be relocated, and is a much cleaner install in my opinion. The downside to the Mantec is that the snorkel is metal, and will develop some rust over time.

The above only applies to a D1 install. On the D2, both snorkels attach to the intake in the fenderwell, so for a D2 it only comes down to esthetics and $$$$

Jeez! The first time EVER I actually say something nice about the ARB snorkel, and look what happens! I stand corrected.:-) I will now revert back to my more normal 'mantec is the best' stance.

IMO, I think the Mantec looks better. That's only looks though. If one had obviously better performance, then I would go with that one. I would get a mantec right know, but I'm afraid some of the ASSHOLES at my highschool would throw trash down it. I have already had problems with kids messing with my car just because it's a Rover. Some teenagers can be real pricks.

Now I got myself all pissed off. :-)

Matthew,
I know how you feel. I had the same problems back in prep school. I eventually got used to everyone using it as a garbage can. McDonalds wrappers and ketchup dripping down the side are always fun. They'd steal my winter wheel hub caps and hide them somewhere, write inapropriate things on the windows with soap. Back then I had a Volvo 850R (the racing model). Sweet car with it's suede seats. The worst though was when someone broke into my gym locker and moved my car to the other side of campus. But once you get to college, it's not so bad. If you go to a small liberal arts school (I went to Hamilton College) everyone seems to have a nice car.

And I think the Mantec looks better. I'd get that one.

I wish. That would be great to see one of those jerks running around screaming their lungs out becuase my spidy's sinking her fangs in. That little things got an ATTITUDE! ;) I have though about just putting a wire mesh at the opening (on a Mantec) of the snorkel. I just don't know if that would be enough though. I'm 17, and I've never though about doing that kinda stuff to someone elses car, regardless of how nice or crapy it is.
When it was stock, the retards would sit on my running boards and smoke their cigarretes. I told them to get off (in a nice way) and moved my car. Then they got mad at me and said " what were we doing wrong?" DUH DIPSHIT, WHAT DO YOU THINK? I didn't say that though, I just walked off. I figure, if you piss them off, they'll just take it out on your rig. Some people just have no respect.

They both already have a grid over the intake up top. At least the ones I've seen.

i dont know anything about the mantec

but the ARB's have a dropped plenum inside that allows them to hold alot of water before they start passing it on....works nice in the rain.

I've got the ARB. When I read how it had been tested, I decided that was definitely the one for me (they ran over it and it didn't break - and no I don't plan on doing that).

I'm very happy with mine. After I take a strong garden hose to my engine and give it a good bath, I always open it to check the filter as part of my post ride check.

My engine has been mud top to bottom, inside carpet soaked, interior decorated with mud, skid plates look like I am planning on a baking a mud cake, and it's hard to tell what color my truck is under all the mud - yet, the filter is always totally dry.

I'm pretty picky about maintenance. I can't believe how clean my filter is staying since I installed snorkel. Pre-snorkel, I used to have to change it after every trail ride.
