I have a DISCO 2 2001 with 85K miles on it. I was just told by the dealer that my front catalytic converter was begining to go bad. The dealer told me it was going to run me about $1000 for them to do that. I am looking for other ways to get the catalytic converter replaced besides the dealer. Any ideas. Also how can you tell your catalytic converter is going bad. I read about using a rubber hammer but what exactly am I looking for? I have not noticed anything wrong with it my self. |

When the matrix inside the catalytic converter goes bad, it starts to rattle during idle. I've read that lower octane gas can cause the converters to go bad (and a known Disco problem). Metal can transmit vibrations from one location to another. To be sure it's your converter, I would suggest getting underneath and listening for it while the truck is idling. |

I would ask around, and find a muffler shop that has a pipe bender, and does quality work. (usually NOT one of the franchises). Go see them for an estimate and other ideas about your cats, and exhaust system. Nothing like a custom pipe job. I doubt your cats are bad. Rick |

I checked my owner's manual hoping the catalytic converters are covered for 100K miles. The cats are covered for 3 years/42K miles from date of purchase. My cats are rattling and shaking. - 97 Disco SD |

I think the coverage is 8-80 for the majority of the U.S....Check your manual for details.

Wow! Hoping it is covered for longer than what my manual states. I will call the LR dealer tomorrow morning and verify. |

if the dealer gives you an answer you don't like call customer service. Sometimes if you ask nice they will bend way over to help you, including free parts and installs. (got a manifold out of warranty replaced by just asking...Thats one of the reasons why i've switched from Jeeps to Landys) |
