My rear cargo door just started hesitating and clicking from the hinge at the base of the door. I'm pretty sure I have determined the source of clicking. It is hesitating and trying to stop within the gooves that are in the track on the bottom of the cargo door.

Kind of hard to explain, but I took pics:

The yellow line points to where the hinge attaches at the bottom of the cargo door.

The pink lines mark the grooves in the track where it is getting hung up and clicking.

The green line marks where the hinge attaches to the back of my truck. When I watch this area as the clicking occurs it is "jumping" up and down.

Can I make adjustments somewhere to fix this and get door opening and closing smoothly again??

Thanks in advance, Jamie

Jamie, try giving it a WD40 bath. Amazing what that stuff can do to squeeks and rough mechanism. I bet those 'grooves' are there to give the door some kind of a 'keep open' mode in various stages. Good luck!

Glenn,

I just ried that and it didn't help. The clicking sound is getting much louder (as in my neighbors across the street can hear it).

It sounds like something is trying to break, but I can't see anything even when using a mirror and snake light.

After spraying it with WD40, I can also hear grit and sand as it moves. I've cleaned it and it clicking sound didn't get better.

Any other ideas??

Do you know what it would sound like IF the hinge was about to break? (btw, I have tried lifting the door as I open and close it to see if maybe door sag was causing the problem and as far as I can tell that is not affecting it)

Thanks, Jamie

I would try some spray lube (good stuff). WD40 is more of a water repelant than a lube....but that is just my opinion.

Spray it, move it spray it, move it, spray it......you get the idea.

How many times have you opened the door since you hung all that stuff on it in the spare tire carrier?

Maybe something has bent out of alignment?

Just a thought..........

At least it doesn't sound like you think my door is about going to fall off :-)

I found 4 things in my garage that might work??

Silicone Spray (Snap)
TECH Bicycle Chain Lubricant (Dumonde)
White Lightning (Whtlight)
Waterproof Grease for Ball and Roller Bearings (Phil Wood)

Do you think I could try using any of those?

I just cleaned as much as the WD40 off as much as I could. Considered trying to use water with spray hose to get the dirt out, but cargo door doesn't look like it has drain holes like my other doors have - so I don't think that's a very good idea.

Jim, are you going on Richloam night run tonight? Earlier today I decided not to go - but, UPS just delivered my new tree strap and kinetic recovery rope - so now I'm thinking about going again. 9pm - 5:30am sure makes for a long night :-(

Is the pic below a sign of too much fun too?? Sometimes I wonder how in the world I manage to break so much stuff!!

Thanks again, Jamie

Silicone Spray (Snap)===Might work depending on how thin it is (a light weight spray oil would be best)

TECH Bicycle Chain Lubricant (Dumonde)===== Too Sticky

White Lightning (Whtlight) ===== Chain lube if it spray's maybe.

Waterproof Grease for Ball and Roller Bearings (Phil Wood) ==== Grease too sticky for cleaning....oil

I would recommend a Penitrating (sp) oil or even a light weapons grade oil. Remember you are trying to clean and lube....so it has to get in there and get the bad stuff out.

If too think it may get in, but it will not get anything out.

You also want it to provide some type of lubing function.

I normally carry a penetrating oil in my rover tool bag, but it is outside in the rain or I would go see what I normally use.

also, it looks like your recovery strap has a slight tear or at least a bad fray.....not good. I don't think I would trust that for recovery....but then again. I am a not wrapped too tight, so you never know......

Thanks Joey,

I've got Militec, so I'll go give that a try right now.

That goofy tree strap has a very bad fray AND 2 burns thru the outer layer. I have absolutely no clue how any of the 3 damaged areas occured.

I absolutey agree with you on not trusting it - that's why I ordered a new tree strap. I needed to replace my recovery strap too - but, I know what I did to it. I was really proud of myself for keeping my recovery strap so clean. I kept it clean by soaking it in a big rubbermaid tub overnight in a strong solution of Dawn dishwashing detergent. I followed that up with a few days of drying it out in the sun (it is humid here). I truly did not know any better!!

The new tree strap I ordered is from EE and it has movable thick protective sleeves on it. I'm convinced that has to give it a longer life.

As far as my recovery strap goes, I decided to try switching to a kinetic rope. I have read that it is stronger and makes for a more gentle recovery.

Tried Militec. No change (yet?). Cleaned everything I could reach with Q-Tips, still no change. I squirted some more Militec up into it - I think I'll let it soak for an hour and try the door again.

I've looked at all the pictures in the workshop manual. Compared the pictures/diagrams to my door and everything looks right as far as I can tell.

The problem might be in part M76 2933A according to the picture on page Repairs 76-1-3. It shows just the part number - no pictures for it. Gee Whiz, I should have just called the dealership this morning!

I'll let you know if I figure out the problem. I just can't imagine that the clicking should be that loud.

Greg, I've opened the door thousands of times since I put stuff on the back (stuff I use everyday is back there). However, there is nothing heavy in my Joey Pack anymore. Bill had me move recovery gear forward where it is always within close reach and to distribute weight farther forward.

Thanks SO MUCH for your suggestions!! :-) :-) :-) :-)

Hmmm....Mine has always clicked and jumped at the green arrows. I thought it was normal.

I let it soak overnight. It's still doing it. My use of the word "click" was way too tame of a description. It is more of a VERY LOUD snapping and cracking sound (think more of the sound that a hammer makes when it hits metal).

In addition, it takes considerable force (as in, I have to push the door - not pull it open or closed with just my arm) to move it out of one position of the grooved track and onto the next.

The loud sound is present as it moves into each groove and then again when it is moved out of the groove.

An afternoon drive up to the dealership may be in order... I'll keep you posted...

Thanks again, Jamie

Went to the dealership and the mystery is solved. The check strap needs to be replaced (it is not repairable). They have to order it and will call whenever it comes in - it will take about 10 minutes to change it out.

Thanks again for all of your help so I got to try to fix it myself :-) :-) Jamie

Strange, mines always done it too.

Normal Id say, its the stops to hold door open in different positions.
I lube to keep it smooth with spray chain oil.
