About 2 months ago had experience w/ oil light coming on after driving 1 1/2 hours at highway speeds... engine very clattery sounding. Stopped and checked all fluids - Oil level fine. My mechanic (not dealer) dropped the pan and found hylomar gasket sealant clogging the oil screen pickup apparently from some previous repair before I owned the vehicle. He said the stuff was all over the place. After the fix still had minor lifter clatter as it always has.

Yesterday almost the exact same problem after a 90 mile drive at highway speeds - light on, clattery, oil OK. Did not drive once light came on in all cases. Let it sit and drove it home 90 miles with no trouble except when I was 1/2 mile form home - same thing again.

Vehicle leaks small amounts nightly - as I know most do.

Based on previous posts - I'm thinking oil pump - am I totally off base here??

Any help appreciated - I'm taking it in again tomorrow. My mechanic has 30 yrs+ experience, very well respected, has worked on Discos and Rangies.

Had the same problem with 96 D1 with about the same mileage. Despite being told that 4.0 oil pumps don't go bad, I replaced the pump and it fixed the problem. I too had the clogged pickup tube about 6 months before the pump failed. The pump was replaced about a year ago and I have not had any problems since. You might as well replace the water pump, serp belt and all of the gaskets while your at it. Make sure you don't forget the pickup tube gasket and pan gasket, (the pan has to come off to replace the pump).

good luck.

I also had the same problem and replaced the oil pump as well. Do yourself a favour and pop off the valve cover. I think what you will find is that it is clogged full of sludge. If you don't want to take off the valve gasket check to see if your pcv hose is clogged up.. if it is you probabably have a sludge problem. The reason why you have the oil light coming on at highway speeds is because of the the sludge it takes a little more time for the oil to make it to the pan and after a while at higher rpms the motor starts starving for oil at the pump... that was the problem in my case. After thouroughly cleaning the motor..all is well now.

ps. a clogged pcv hose prevents then motor from venting and promotes the sludge buildup. check out the thread "dirt lil motor" or "dirty motor" for some pics of the problem.

I think you will see the hose on the left valve cover toward the rear as well you should see it T into another hose... check that T to make sure it isn't clogged up as well.
