I have a problem with the left turn signal and brake light. I am convinced it is in the Disco not in the trailer as the problem repeats on both trailers I have. I have a 2003 Disco. It worked fine last year with the same trailers. The wiring harness is the LR original equipment, installed by the dealer at the time of purchase, not an aftermarket product.

The trailer's left turn signal and brake light don't work, the lights do work. The right side works great. I tested the voltage and it is the same on both sides. If I swap the green and yellow leads, the left side works fine and right side has the problem. Thus, it has to be in the Disco somewhere. When connected, the trailer light indicator works when the right turn is on, but not the left. I have tried swapping the left and right blinker fuses with no effect. It seems it has something to do with the load on the left turn signal. Any suggestions???

Not being familiar with the innards of the wiring harness thingummy, it's hard to comment. Except to say that if it is OEM on a 2003 vehicle, surely you can go tell your friendly LR dealer to fix it under warranty and break a couple of other things while they're at it. Oh, wait, now I see the problem with this approach...

The trailer light wiring option uses four diodes in it so that the 1157 bulbs which are used in most trailers can share the turn and brake signal on the same element in the bulb. The tail lightes on our Land Rovers have seperate bulbs for turn and brake lighting of the lamps. These diodes stop the current from the turn or brake lamps from screwing up your lighting on your LR. If the diode fails two things can happen. The current doesn't get to the respective lamp on the trailer as the diode is burned out and circuit is effectivley open. Alternately the diode fails to stop the current in the wrong direction and to be honest I don't really know just what a D1 would do with brake or turn signal votage travelling into the other circuits wire. Depending on which of the two diodes it is for the left of right side of the vehicle it could result in the following. Thr brake would light up the turn signals or the turn signal would be in the brake light as well on the vehicle. So make sure your D1's lights are working with the trailer plugged in. If that is the case I would suspect the diodes for the left side trailer lights are cooked and exhibiting an open circuit thus disallowing any current to travel to the your trailers lamps on the left side.

You will find them potted in a box in the wire loome which goes to your trailer plug connector on the bumper or were ever it is you have it mounted. The box on my 4.6 is plugged in on the NAS passenger side and plugged into the wire harness behind the access panel which allows you to replace bubs and such. If you disconnect it from the plug you might be able to see if it clears up your problem.
