Why 03 Discovery in NA is not equipped with CDL? Could there be any reasons the Land Rover think we dont need them. And how important is CDL for our daily driving? |

Well to start will you will find the from the factory all D2's from 1999 thru 2003 do not come with CDL (some have the internals, but need extra parts) Daily driving = since your profile doesn't say where you live, unless you live in an extreme high snow area, then CDL will not do you much good on the Daily Drive (unless you drive off road daily ). CDL = Center Differential Lock, it locks the front and rear axels together. Not something you want to do on dry pavement unless you have a lot of money you want to give to the dealer. The Disco has 3 open Differentials, front middle and rear. Basically it is providing traction on all wheels at the same time with the same amount unless one spins, then you have just one spining wheel. (That is when ETC will help, by braking the spinning wheel to provide traction to the other non-spinning wheels) Hope this helps |

The 2003 (2001-2003) don't have a CDL (nipple) because Land Rover made a mistake and thought we didn't want them. They're back in 2004. 1999-2001's had to get fitted with either a solenoid or linkage from a D1 (or other home grown link) to activate the CDL. The 2003's still have the CDL but the housing won't permit any means of locking the CD. |
