My '94 Disco seems to be lacking rear brakes. The antilock is unpluged under the hood and as I understand it this should not affect normal brake operation. However on wet roads when I apply the brakes the front wheels tend to lock and hydroplane. The tires are good and should be providing adequate traction. I believe that I lack braking in the rear, but I don't know why. Any help would be greatly appreciated. |

Locking the fronts is not unusual - all your braking force is up front. Pop a rear wheel, stick your head in the wheel well, and have a friend press the brake pedal. See if they're working. Hell, you can probably visually verify with the wheels on... |

I understand that the majority of the braking, say 80%, is up front but this thing has scared me pretty badly under circumstances that should have been uneventful. These were wet roads, after a strong rain, not a just enough to wet the oil and dust. Very reasonable braking in a turn and you plow staight ahead. Even straight line braking when done fairly agressively will result in a loss of control. I don't think this can be normal. On snow and ice the vehicle would be totally uncontrollable even a low speeds. |

Have you attempted any diagnosis at all? How are the brake lines? have you flushed the system or at least bled it? leaks? followed Blue's advice? It's impossible for anyone to provide even an educated guess until you can provide a crumb of useful info. joe |

I'm with you Joe, I just wanted to see if this might be a common problem with Discovery. I was curious about the regulator valve which controls the rear brakes but Haynes doesn't offer any help there except to take the vehicle to the dealer if you suspect it. My closest dealer is 100 miles and at least in my book the dealer is a last resort anyway. I haven't taken Blue's advice yet because its been dark here since he gave me the suggestion but I will be following it as soon as possible as well as your suggestion to at least bleed if not flush the lines. Thanks for your interest and comments. Any other suggestions will be appreciated and I will follow up when I have more information, if I haven't solved the problem. Kevin |
