While my 96 Disco is having hard start problems, leaking rear axles, still leaking steering fluid, and door actuators that work when they want to, not accounting for all the money I've put into the "Money Pit" yesterday I realized how much I appreciated my rig again.

While I was driving home, I noticed a Chevy truck buried to its frame in some soft ground next to the road. The field had just been retilled and was super soft. Evidently this guy had wanted to turn around using this open field and didn't realize how soft the ground was. Experience obviously played a big part as it looked like he simply continued to dig himself deeper and deeper. He said he tried to put it into 4x4 to get unstuck but it wouldn't engage. When I turned around I ended driving into the same stuff and immediately realized how soft the ground was - it seemed like the disco was floating but it never got stuck. I was pretty careful to not spin any of the tires.

He mentioned that he had a strap, and so he pulled out this 8 foot rope with 2 hooks at either end. The setup looks like you could get it at the 99 cent store on sale. Nonetheless, we tried to bridle his truck with the setup using my tow strap as well. Well the two times we used it, the hooks ripped off. Eventually we ended up with a single point pull with my strap.

I put the disco in High diff lock, and with a consistent gentle pull, got him out of the hole he had dug himself. My rig never got stuck, never gave me problems, and got the job done with no fuss. Took 5 minutes of my time, and probably saved him a few hours. He mentioned that the 4x4 drive finally kicked in near the end - but not being familiar with their systems, I didn't know to believe him or not.

In the end, the Disco performed flawlessly when I needed it to - I guess that's all that matters in the end.

Everyone has excuses for why thier stuck. My favorite was
"These tires werent meant for this car"
