I'm taking my D2 in tomorrow to have the cargo door check strap replaced and will have the oil changed while I am there (I have them do this on a regular basis since I don't put alot of miles on my truck).

My dealership switches to synthetic oil at 7500 miles. Since I'm almost to 7000 miles, I have a feeling they will want to switch my rover over to synthetic oil tomorrow.

I've tried to keep up with Dweb posts on synthetics and I don't think I have read anything negative. Would still like to make sure that it's ok before I switch. Has anyone had any problems with it?

Thanks in advance, Jamie

No problems with synthetic oil here. I switched to Castrol Syntec 5W-50 at about 7,000 miles. (The major reason for using Syntec 5W-50 was that my dealer used this particular oil and weight for Freelanders.)

I started doing my own oil changes recently and went with Mobil 1 10W-30.

My 97 has no leaks at all running on dino juice. When I bought her with 80K miles I put Mobil1 full synthetic and have noticed no leaks still. Runs great! :-)

The earlier you switch , the better. I know guy who has over 200K on his RR classic, and has used synth for over 10 years. He popped a valve cover to look, 'cuz thats what Rover guys do on a slow weekend. He might as well have looked at a new engine, 'cuz thats what it looked like inside.

No negatives except cost but still cheap in the long run. I've used synthetic oils for all my vehicles since it became available and I have positive results.

For example:
I've owned 2 Toyota's (Avalon/4runner) w/ V6 engines and they both had recall notices due to oil sludge/oil pressure issues/oil leaks but both never showed this problem and one of them had 186K miles and still going strong. I got tired of driving it so I sold the truck and got a DII(as I cross my fingers for reliability).

Thanks for the input :-) Feel confident about switching to synthetics. I scheduled oil change for tomorrow since the shop is not so busy - I plan to hang out and watch so that someday I will be able to change it myself if I need to. :-)
