I'm looking for some feedback regarding '94 Discos. I don't know too much about the one I've seen for sale, but the price is right (asking $6500) and a used Disco will meet all of my off-roading and family needs.

I know that a '94 is less of a computer than the later models, but are there any things I need to worry about concerning a '94 specifically?

Thanks for the feed back.
Peace
Steve

Steve I had a 94 and nothing out of the ordinary went wrong. Make sure it was maintained well, but other than that sounds like a deal.

Steve-
I've got a 94 and the only thing I would add is to check the wheel wells, underneath the plastic if you can (you can look from the top in the engine well too) as I just discovered some rust on my driver side just to the rear of the air cleaner. Nothing too bad yet, and considering the age of the truck, not a suprise.
Just another place to look.

On the whole I love my truck and appreciate its simplicity.

Ditto,
My 94' has been almost bulletproof. Bought with 90k miles. Now has 125,000 miles. I have replaced the Starter, some random light bulbs, fixed the rear door lock mechanism, added lots of custom wiring, and just replaced some coolant hoses and thermostat as well.
Its been quite good to me so far. althought the bushings are TOTALLY shot and the Shocks were shot but I just poot new bilsteins in it.
Go for it.

Look in the oil filler for excess carbon. Should be brown, not crusty black, around where the oil pools. Ask the owner how often the oil was changed.

I'm not positive but reasonably certain the '94 has the "suffix B" 3.9 L engine. This has most of the changes made for the 4.0, such as new front engine cover with integrated oil pump and serpentine belt as well as 10 bolt heads vs 14 for the 3.9L. This fixes a major source of head gasket problems. It still has the 3.9L 2 bolt main block, which is not as strong as the 4 bolt 4.0 block, though doesn't seem to be a problem.

The good news is you have the old 14CUX efi cpu instead of the GEMS (which caused carbon buildup requiring head rebuilding). Bad news is you have an old style distributor.

Steve,
I have a 94 Disco that I change the short block after 147K to a 4.0. Given all the cost for diagnosing an engine noise (knocking), a replacement block was more reasonable except I do have a rust on both the Alpine window as well. Watch out for oil cooler lines (feed and return) they seem to leak after 120K.
