Some of you might remember that i was having an issue with a smashed spark plug in one of my cylinders. well the picture below pretty much explains how that was happening. as you can see the top compression ring was coming apart. still amazing how this engine ran so well for so long without giving many driveability issues.
bad

Garrett, that is an all too familiar scene. I just got my 96 back on the road after putting a new engine in it. The same thing happened, it drove fine for months, then one day a big enough chunk of piston broke off and killed it. I had never driven a Rover before I bought mine, and at the time, I thought it ran fine, it ticked a bit, but not too bad. But after driving the new motor, I definately tell how off it was.

fortunately i have a warranty on the truck. as i was explaining it to him he seemed to have dealt with this issue many times with D1's.
i just finished tearing the motor down today and was pretty amazed to see this. i knew something was up, but was not prepared to see this mess. oh well.
the warranty company will most likely put in a used motor. i just hope it's a decent motor, but that will be hard to know for sure.
am happy also that i found out why all my issues were happening.
one of my heads is cracked too, but again with large chunks of metal being tossed around the heads i can see why.
currently i have a '67 Buick Wildcat with a 430 ci at my shop. i think it might fit. :-)

Smashed plug almost always equals dropped liner. Have seen a few that way. One I know ran that way for at least 25k miles.

Get them to write you a check equal to the used motor and go with a new DII short block.

Email me and I will see what I can do to help.

Mark, what kind of ticking are you talking about? My 98 DI just started ticking about 4,000 miles or so ago im at 58,000 now.
thanks

ron. they are actually sending someone out to take a look at this. i guess it is SOP to do that. as soon i am told what i have to do (ugh) i will let ya know. would rather have a new short block than a used motor of an uncertain past in my truck.

Matt,
When I bought the truck, I thought it was just a lifter ticking. It sounded very similar to that.
But it was actually chips of aluminum banging around in the cylinder, up though the valves, and into the plenum. Your ticking could be many different things, so don't be too worried yet.

Garrett,
I definately agree with Ron. Get a new motor. I shopped around a lot for a used engine before I bought a new short block. The new motor was actually far cheaper than a used engine. I did build it myself, so that was a factor, but all in all, it was cheaper.

I reckon it's been pinging or it's been hot, why not fix it. If the bore is ok why not a get a piston, give the whole block a hone a set of rings and big ends. If the bore is stuffed replace the liner or bore and fit a set of over size pistons. Shame your not here in Brisbane Australia, M.R Automotive do an exchange recon engine fitted for $2300 AUD thats $ 1600 us

Hi Ron.
Hi Mark.
I agree with Ron and Mark. Get a check, get a new block and goodies, build it yourself.
If you decide on a short block and a head, contact me. I have great prices on new blocks and heads. 4.0 or 4.6 blocks. If I can help, let me know.

Garrett,
Mike's your man. He's not kidding about the great prices, and service. Can't say enough good about him, or my new motor.

Thanks for the kind words Mark! It was great working with you. I'm glad I could help you out.
Give me a call.

Garrett, nothing beats building your own engine. You get to do it exactly the way you would want it done. And if you have any questions during the build, just ask Mark. He's an old pro at it.
