Hey guys, last night my brother hit a deer out on a backroad, and his front end is just plain mangled. Luckily, there's no damage to the hood or sides, but his factory air dam and brush bar are toast. My question is this: Can he just have the insurance company cut him a check, and replace those factory hinderances with a TJM or a Slimline, or does he have to put the factory components back on? I know some of you have been in similar situations, so please, help us out.

It depends on if the vehicle has a lien they will cut the check to him and the body shop or person that will repair.

I was involved in a wreck that was the other drivers fault. The insurance company cut the check to me and I was able to get a ARB and winch with no money out of pocket.

That was my experience with insurance as the lienholder of the vehicle. Traded-up to the ARB from my damaged stock bumper and end-caps. This is one instance where the book value on parts (grab a couple of estimates) will help you.

I have State Farm and they always have just cut me checks (over the last 15 years) the last time I cracked the windshield and when I took it in for the check out, they said I needed a paint job and gave me more money! I just had the usual rock chips in the front. But I've never had a lien on a vehicle so I don't know if thats different or how other companies would do it. I have EVERYTHING covered by State Farm and that may mean something to them, too. And i've only had one accident that was my fault, and I had no deductable and my premiums didn't go up. State Farm can cost a little bit more, but the service is fast and fair.

I appreciate it guys. I had seen it talked about before, but I couldn't find the posts. The little brother is going to be quite happy if he gets a Slimline for nothing but a bittersweet encounter with some of that crazy Tennessee fauna.

I too had the same happen to me. I had the body shop get the estimate to StateFarm, then told them to put on a ARB for me. No cost swap, the shop put the ARB on and all. I had extra money so I used it towards shocks and springs, went right throught the body shop and Great Basin Rovers for all the parts. Just ask the body shop, bet they will have no problem helping out. I love the Rover, I hit a 100 to 110lbs doe at 60mph. Destroyed the grill, bumper, air dam, and lights, but didn't touch the radiator or condenser. We drove home without issue. Also the truck took the hit, stayed going straight, and we came to a nice controled stop and were all safe. Had we been in my wifes Audi, I'm sure we would have had a totaled car.

His wreck was at about 20 mph, and he pretty much destroyed what you did Andy, so this must have been a big deer!

And Jamie, thanks for asking; he's absolutely fine. Just a bit pissed that he can't pick up as many chicks in my grandpa's Buick. :-)

You guys are lucky. I got hit while driving my dads vette and needed a new door. "No fault" insurance or whatever its called here in NJ screwed me. I never got my $500 deductible back, but insurance picked up the other $1500

Well, I read this post and had to add my $.02. My brother and I went to MT & WY in October for some camping & fly fishing. Just outside of Pinedale, WY, we hit a moose in a D2. Destroyed (more like disentegrated) the bumper, right fender, lights, turn signal, etc. It did not affect anything mechanical, so we trucked on! Gotta love the Rover!

For those who are interested, the moose was not permanently injured. I had just installed a 3" OME lift (Thanks John Lee @ EE). With this setup, the moose's belly was about level with the hood...It was huge. Anyway, we put a spotlight on her and were tempted to shoot w/ a 44 mag, but took the high road and continued on our trip.

Once we got home, the body shop happened to have a brand new ARB that a previous customer did not like and I got it for half price.
