What do you use for sorage boxes on your roof rack? The ideal box for me would be someting inexpensive, somewhat weather tight, lockable and easy to secure to the rack although I would like sugestions even if they don't meet all my criteria. (pelicans are too expensive for my blood) |

Neal, there was a huge thread on this subject not terrible long ago. You might want to try and dig that one up. There were lots of alternate suggestions in there and the pros & cons. Chris von C |

depending on what you want to carry(size) you can get various size "action packers" at pep boys or wherever and they work pretty good. not water proof or anything but a pretty good value. rob |

You know what is the best use I've found for ammo cans? Carrying ammo. You can carry about 10 minutes worth of 5.56mm in the small cans if your using it properly. Greg |

.50 cans are small compared to 20mm cans, and mortar cans, etc. etc. http://www.ammocans.com/pitbull.html

And Greg P, No, the small cans of ammo should last quite awhile if you pay attention to shot placement, aka Marine Corps "One Shot One Kill" thinking, instead of Army "Spray and Pray" attitude.... lol.... -L |

"Spray and Pray" That's great. Hey Leslie, TOW Missile boxes are water proof and quite large. But I don't think you can go to Sears to pick those up. |

you both (leslie and paul) have seen the one i have on my rack. about 24"X14". not sure what that thing held. not water tight, but great for storing straps, shackels, jumper cables, etc. actually i have never had water in them, but that is not to say it can't get in. they are low profile too. would rather have some nice pelicans of course. |

Don't forget the most important characteristic of a rack storage Box.......that is the ability to support sticker adhesion!!! Yeah, those guys at EE have nice Boxes and Cans for Rack utilization. (no inuendos intended) |

Can you imagine the look on people's faces when they pass you seeing a missle box on your rack! "Warning! Warning! Disarm HCU prior to shipment. Failure to apply could result in detonation" I guess that is a good way to deter tailgaters. |

yeah that is the first thing people ask me. (first they usually just say WTF are you driving?) i think crossing the canada border i would get stopped and get a deep cavity search with that up there. my 7 year old nephew likes to tell his buddies i carry grenades up there. i think it still does say "missles" or "grenades" on it. the rear work lamps can deter tailgaters at night. |

I guess you'll be fine just as long as someone doesn't call the police or FBI on your suspicious looking package. |

they look pretty heavy. not as versitile as the action packers, dry backs or pelicans. nice to be able to load the gear up and then put the containers where you like and arrange them your own way. |

Thanks Garrett but for that kind of money you may as well go for the pelicans. I'm looking for a cheaper alternative. |

yea but tupperware doesnt allow for correct sticker placement! v22 has the right idea, a missle box strapped to the top of the LR would be cool! mike w |

I went to Home Depot and found some black 31 gallon storage containers kind of like the ones in the rubermaid link I posted above. They were $14.88 each. They will do me just fine. Thanks Ho. |

Yeah, I use Pelican Cases for many things. I love them. For shackels, chains and other stuff that gets banged around hard, a good M-203 grenade ammunition container works wonders. They are damn near unbreakable. I love pelican cases, but I feel these Ammo cans are more durable, and for the size are much cheaper. Check out the ones I'm talking about at extremeoutback.com. There are two sizes of this veriaty. The handles are on the sides, and no handle is on the lid. The lid is completely removable. You can find them much cheaper if you look around. The Action Packers are fine, and light weight, but not nearly as durable as the other options. I know I'm kind of fanatical about durability, but with the sort of luck I have, I like a little security. It's really a matter of personal needs. Cheers, Kennith |
