Hello everyone, long-time reader first-time poster.

My 98 Disco has given me 75k relatively trouble-free miles since new. That is until today, we started the old girl up today and heard this wicked knocking from the motor. So looks like an engine transplant my be in order.

So I'm looking for place to source a long/short block and I can sway my FI and accessories over to. I'd rather have a new unit if possible.

Thanks for the help in advance!

-Shannon

Are you sure an engine? Does the knocking go away after awhile?

Take it to Luke at Roverclubhouse in Durham and let him diagnose it. Don't assume the engine is shot until you get a good independent LR mechanic to check it out.

Charles,

Well I've been doing a little research and I listened to it again (after I calmed down a little) it actually sounds like a lifter or a loose rocker arm.. is this a common problem? Yes it goes away after about 3-4 minutes.

The old girl is going to the shop tomorrow to get the final word anyway, I was just trying to get my ducks in a row if I need to replace the engine.

Thanks,
Shannon

Shannon,

Would you please let us know what the diagnosis is? I'd like to hear what they think is wrong.

Thanks.

Do you do regular oil maintenance? I change oil every 3k and substitute a quart of rislone for a quart of oil. Over 150k and running strong. I dont think you have a problem.

The truck has never missed a dealer service. BUT, I have decided to switch to synthetic oil every 3k miles.

Thanks,
Shannon

I had a bad rocker arm. The loud click/knock didn't go away. A sticky lifter might go away, but 3-4 minutes? Might be the infamous sticking exhaust valve.

Sounds like sticking valve.

Well the dealer called me late this-afternoon and said that they thought the noise was caused by "sludge build-up". They said they flushed the motor (with what??), filled her up with oil and the knocking is gone. Hmmm, it sometimes that easy?

I dunno, I've rebuilt a few engines myself and I've never heard a knock like that being cured by new oil. Does the aluminum block tend to amplify noises like that?

Thanks for the help,
Shannon

Yes it is that easy. This is why I use the rislone. You might have to do another flush in 10k.

Shannon,
SO this means you've been running dino oil in the engine up to 75K miles, and now have decided to switch to synth? What is the dealer service interval for changing oil - 7500K miles? If so, do you know what brand of oil they were using?
That explains your problem.
If you have sludge in the upper parts of the engine, there is a good probability there is sludge in the pan.
If you're going to switch to synth., remove the pan and clean the layer of sludge out. Or your oil will start to look dirty again at the first fill-up. At just over 2X the milage you have, I had almost a 1/4" of gunk in my pan.

FWIW - whenever I hear my '96 D1 tapping after the cold start in the morning, I know that it's time for an oil change. When I use 5W50, the tapping goes away immediately, if it's 20W50, it takes a couple of days' driving for lifters to clean up. I only use synthetic, and the oil change intervals are about 4-5 kmi apart.

My wife picked the Disco up today, she said it was purring like a kitten...

Thanks for all the advice, it's been an education.
