I need to tighten my E-brake. I have the manual but it is not all that descriptive and I have never done it before. I am hoping to get some detailed guidance before I fumble around out in the cool and rain. I have a 1996 D1 Thanks |

The parking brake drum is on the rear of the transfer case and attaches to the rear driveshaft. There is a bolt (11/16ths if I remember correctly) on the bottom front side of it. Tightening this bolt tightens the brake. Give it a turn and check the brake to see if you like it. It took me a few times to get mine adjusted to my liking. |

When you tighten the bolt on the Brake drum, you are setting the clearence for the E-Brake. tighten it down, then back it off until you can spin the drum without it rubbing, then you need to adjust the cable on the inside of the vehicle.... This is the fun part....you will find a spinner where the cable goes through the floor (you have to remove the center console first, then you can tighten the cable until it works well after 3 clicks...at least that is what my manual says. |

I found the 11/16 bolt and gave it a couple turns. The E-brake is tighter but how do you tell if it is too tight to allow the drum to spin w/o rubbing? I.E....how do I "spin the drum" to check? |

If you dont want to lift one end of vehicle and chock other a quick check is to turn/wiggle tailshaft by hand to feel slop before tightning. Adsj nut until slop stops then turn back a little bit until shaft slops again. You shouldnt need to adj cable. Bazzle |

Sorry I miss read the page....trying to help and work too much... Parking brake adjust 1. Select a gear or P in main gearbox. 2. Chock road wheels. 3. Release parkbrake lever. 4. Remove switch panel from centre console. 5. Underneath vehicle, rotate brake adjuster clockwise until brake shoes are fully expanded against drum. 6. Back off adjuster until drum is free to rotate. 7. Rotate adjustment thumbwheel below parkbrake lever until parking brake is fully operational on third notch of ratchet. NOTE: Cable adjustment must ONLY be used for initial setting and to compensate for cable stretch. It MUST NOT be used to take up brake shoe wear, which MUST be adjusted at brake drum. 8. Operate parking brake to settle shoes. Recheck parkbrake is fully operational on third notch of ratchet. Readjust if necessary. 9. Refit switch panel. |

The bolt is right beside where your park brake cable enters the drum. Tighten it 1/2 turn at a time until your park brake lever is where you like it. (4 clicks is average) P.S. Use metric tools on a British vehicle |

Do you really have to remove entire center console to get at the cable adjustment? |

No, again that was my miss typing info....sorry....you only need to remove the switch panel (if and only if) you need to adjust the cable itself due to cable stretching. Sorry for the confusing..... |
