I talked to my mechanic (indipendend land rover mechanic) and he told me that for about 3500 they would remove the motor rebuild it and even put in a better can and i could drive it home. That seems like a great price to me. I dont have time to do it myself or i would.

Whats wrong with what you have? Whats he actually planning on doing?

Take a look at www.rpiv8.com. Add $400 to ship an engine to the states

That's high. Drop me an e-mail. I can help you get a great price on either a new standard replacement block or a new 4.6 upgrade for under that price. My email is in my profile.

There was a guy on the RoversNorth board that got his rebuilt for $4K including labor at the local LR dealer and got a new short block too. Short blocks can be had for $1200-$1400, so I'd skip rebuilding it.

for the 4.6 upgrade info search www.rpiv8.com. to get a deal on a new short block and everything else you will need for the project call Mike McCollum at Westchester Land Rover in PA # 610-692-5107 he took care of me a few months ago when i had my engine woes. Really nice guy, very professional. he cuts d-webbers a hell of a deal.

I spend 5k including labor to replace the 94 disco with a 4.0 short block, lifters, left and right exhaust manifolds, oil pumps, front cover engine, and rebuild both heads etc. The old girl is having an engine knocking noise so I decided to replace the short block.

So the shop is gonna' take the engine out, rebuild it with a better cam, and put it back in - all for $3500?
What part of the country is this? Thats closer to $6K in Cal.
Sounds like a heck of a deal - IF the shop does good work, and they're gonna' be around to handle future issues.

I'm with Eric, thats a good deal IF they do good work and are going to be there if anything comes up on down the road with the engine work.
Replace or rebuild? Probably just personal choice. If (when) one of my Disco's needs a rebuild I'll just take it to a buddy back in Dallas (StoidRacing.com ask for the owner Brian) To rebuild what I have instead of a replacement short block. He'll go the extra mile that is only possible with a handbuilt motor. I don't think that there is anything wrong with the shortblocks out there, it's just that I (and probably most on this board) are a bit picky when it comes to our rigs. With the pre-assembled stuff you get what they have, with the shop assembly you can get that little bit extra for whatever driving you do. Add some extra torque and do some things for a longer motor life.
But the pre assembled will get you back on the road faster, and again there is nothing wrong with one. It's more important to find a shop your happy with than the parts they put in. Quality installation is as important as the parts.

To expand a bit on what Lewis said about "with pre-assembled stuff, you get what they have", as far as I know, Rover still uses cast iron piston rings, which is what you get with a $1200 factory short block.
This is one of their annoying bean-counter induced, cheapskate, cost-cutting moves.
Most modern cars have gone to graphite impregnated rings for years.
I had a hi-end shop just rebuild my 3.9. It was one of the little things they suggested to change out and improve the finished product.
So instead of a new 4.0 block, I got oversized pistons, modern rings (not something you'd see in a '48 MG), a whole new bottom end and the engine balanced. I think they had to remove over 120 grams total.
Anyway, unless your 4.0 has a hole in it, a good shop can do alot with $1200 on an already decent block.
