Does anyone know what type of gasoline LR suggests should be run in '94 Discoveries?

As higher Octane rating as possible

it will seem like a waste of money, it'll run pretty good on the regular, but you want to keep the injectors clean.

I believe it is the valves you are protecting most with high test.

If the Land Rover engine management systems - 14CU, 14CUX, GEMS - have a knock sensor, there is no reason to run premium. Lower octane gas has more energy than an equivalent amount of premium.
Octane rating doesn't effect how clean the internals of your engine will be. Thats the result of certain additives. Chevron makes something called techron, which they add to their gas. You can also get it at auto parts stores...at least in parts of the country that also have Chevron dealers. That stuff actually works, but there are other products that will clean things up. Sea Foam...

I believe you are also correct Jeffrey, my understanding is the injectors will get gummed up first.
But whatever it is, try not and use the cheap stuff. I have heard that when the gas company wants to increase profit they start with the cheap stuff first...junk filler additives I guess.

I think 92 is what some of our fortunate companions on the West Coast get as "high" octane. (Unless you get like 100 octane race gas at $5+ a gallon)

I've just accepted that the only thing that gets 87 octane in my life is my lawn mower.

My '95 was also sensitive to what brand I was using. Shell and Chevron seemed best (no knocks, better power at high altitudes.) Cheapo gas, like from Costco or Valero (Ultramar), seemed to mean less power and pinging.

Good info Eric. I use chevron most of the time unless i'm far away. I just use the mid-grade with a tank of the 'good' stuff when out of Moab where its the same price as the mid-grade here, it's all expensive in town here.

My wife's 97 D1 gets better milege with mid grade unleaded. We have also started running different brands instead of sticking to just one sort inspite of having Chevron gas cards. Had to do the exhaust valve replacement job at 38K miles a few years back, ouch! Clipping 85K now and running good and getting close to 300 miles on a tank full. How many miles are you guys seeing when you empty a tank?

You know, I've been having hard start problems recently, and for the past 6 months, I've been using Texco gas, mid grade (89) due to the high prices of gas. I was trying to save where I could for a bit. For about a month now, I've been going to Cheveron and using their highest grade fuel, and you know what - my hard start problem is almost gone. I've been waiting to get it fixed, but it seems that it somewhat fixed itself.
I'm still skeptical though.

As far as gas mileage, I can run 425 on a full tank of gas if its all freeway. With a mixture/normal driving I get at about 350. I don't have a lead foot though, for the most part.

I usually get about 270-300 around town in my D2. I think the manual of my 96 D1 said use an octane of 90. When I had it most of the places around here had either 89 or 91. BP had "super 93." I usually put mid grade in that one as I figured one point either way.......so why not go cheap! Truthfully, I use premium in my D2, though. I dont think it would really matter that much whether you use mid or plus, my dealer told me to run 89, I just figure there is not that big of a price difference and it says premium right there on the cap. Just my $.02. BTW, I put 75,000 miles on the D1 without any valve or injector problems. I would recommend driving the piss out of them if you want a strong motor.
