i need a camera and i want a digital one, but i feel like i will regret the not having both a conventional and digital camera.

has anyone else had this same apprehension?

if you do only own just a digital camera , are you ever wishing that you had a 35mm one, or vice versa?

i'll be going out later tonight to make the purchase :)

thanks
Rob

Well, the thing that sucks about digital cameras is that they don't have a zoom worth anything unless you get like a Canon D30.. Not having a telephoto lens is a draw back.. I have been looking at getting a digital camera but, most all of them are point and shoot.. Not to mention that most of them suck for action shots cause the camera has to stop and think for a second before you can take the next picture.. There are lots pro's but, there are also just as many con's.. It all comes down to what kind of pictures are you going to take with it? If you want to take pictures of things that aren't very far away and aren't moving that a digital camera would be good.. If you want action shots and a really good zoom lense then get a full size film camera.. Having both would be ideal but, would cost more.

no eric, man, we gotta steer rob to get a digital camera, so that he can easily download them to his pc, and email the jpegs to me without going thru develop/scan/email process. :)

I'm still a shoot in 35mm then scan in the pics that you want to be digital.... reason being, I've been a long-time film-camera-type.

The big thing that I'm starting to see the need for a digital though, is for snapping pics of working on the Rover, then posting on-line, w/o having to pay for developing film.

If you want to REALLY take photographs, ones that you could frame and hang on the wall, then go with film; if you want to take snapshots, go digital.

IMHO, FWIW.....

Roberto, I have 3 cameras - Kodak digital, Nikon One-touch auto 35mm, and a Canon auto/manual fancy pants 35mm camera. I've run about 2,500 pics through the digital since I got it in Sept 2000, the Nikon has been in a drawer since Sept 2000, and the Canon made a rare appearance at Truckhaven last Oct since my wife had my digital. Get with the 90's and go digital. Stop by the car audio shop on your way back and check it out - you can upgrade that 8-track player to a new thing called CD's, too.

best part about digi is the preview feature - you can shoot 50 pics of your feet and save only the best 10 or so....that would be a tremendous waste of money with film.

For the last year or so, I have been taking all my stills with my Sony VX2000 camcorder. (Same one the Moab video was shot with.) What I like most about the digital pics is the light sensitivity. I can take awesome nightshots using just natural light.

Rob, you want 35mm stay far far far away from advantix.. Also guys, I heard that there is a digital film insert in the works that you can place in the 35mm camera instead of film.. You can then take the pictures just like you always do and then pull the film/card out and down load to your PC.. I don't know when it's coming out but, I'm sure Kodak is pissed about it.. I like digital cameras too but, I like my big ugly 35mm better till I get $2500 for a D30.. Which will be never..

you guys are sick, twisted perverts. that's all i have to say!!! :) i like it.

actually i have to also say that i have both a digi and nice Leica 35mm for backup. i rarely use the Leica though.

the digi is great.....you need to snap a pic of a car part, private part or anything else and presto it's done. and for the work i do it is great. go to the site, snap some pics and print them out at the office for reference that day. no waiting or having to drop them off at Wal Mart and wonder what the people there are saying about your pictures and your girlfriend.

in the long run i think it would be wise to get a decent one of both of the cameras. no need to spend big $$ on a digi camera.......they just seem to be coming down in price and the quality goes up.

spend $400 and get both. if that is an option for you.

More like spend $800 and get both... However, here is a link to a site that has a listing of places on the net that sell things and there prices as well as a review from customers of the stores.. I have found on average that you can get the camera at least 100 bucks or more cheaper then at the store.. http://www.dealtime.com/

well i was just assuming he would not want to spend that kind of cash. you can get a decent 'point and shoot' for under $200 for sure and a decent digi for close to the same. nothing fancy for sure, but the basics would be covered.

i got my digi camera used from a friend for under $200.....it sold last year for about $900. that is another way to go too.

I like my Sony DCR TRV20. I've had it for a couple of years and it has had no problems.

The features I like are :

It records "stills" onto a memory stick which can be inserted into a 3.5" cassette for upload to a PC.

It can capture stills from digital video motion pictures.

It makes a neat little 35mm sound when taking "stills".

...IEEE 1394 "firewire" interface to upload movies.

.... 8+ hour battery.

35mm vs Advantix: check out http://www.photo.net/photo/aps

In short, you're losing a LOT of negative area.... the prints that you get are okay if all you want are 3x5 prints or such, but again, if you want to make an 8x10 and hang it on the wall, you need a 35mm or a medium format, or a high-end digital (read, lots of money!)

If you're thinking about a 35mm, as in a point-n-shoot, I'd suggest digital instead. But if you want some nice photos, an SLR system would be a better choice.

Don't get me wrong, you can do pro-quality work with a digital camera, and it doesn't HAVE to be one of the $2500 Nikon SLR digital bodies... a couple hundred dollars, and you'll have a decent digital camera that will suit most needs, because most of your photos aren't being framed and hung...

But, it's still fun to take photos, trying to get something framable....

so i went out with the absolute intent to come home with a new camera tonight.

man,, no store out there has anything i want. they were sold out of everything. i went to best buy and they had hour long lines because of the "no tax" week.. people are only saving 6% and they thing it's the end all bargain. i guess some are buying jst to spite the gov.

i want about a $300 camera and i looked heavely at this sony unit i cant rember the name but it was 300 and it only came with 8mb memory stick.. this means i'll need to spend $100 more to get an adequate 128mb memory stick, + i want macro and spot metering.. it's just too much $

i think i need a 35mm advantix.. if only they made that i would be satisfied.

and ax, i've handeled your equipment,, it's the best i've ever had the pleasure of playing with. i just cant afford that. :)

looks like i'll be going with a 35mm with 120mm zoom and some bells and whistles

Recently bought a Cannon A20 Digital, after replacing my APS camera (Advantix). APS was terrible after 35mm, glad to see it gone.

I don't take too many pictures (20-30 a month), but so far we have the following points

Advantages:
+ No film to develop
+ No more film to buy
+ Preview pics as you take them
+ Delete unwanted pics from camera as you go
+ email pics from PC without having to scan them
+ Store pics on computer, burn them to CD for no loss of quality, and easy storage.

Disadvantages
- High outlay for decent Digital Camera
- Battery life is short with preview always on
- You need a good printer for printed results
- Zoom is not as good as 35mm etc.
- Getting good enlargements relies on good digital camera and printer
- Cannot pick up photo's and take them to a friends (unless you've printed them out!)
- Photo quality paper is quite expensive (but you can get about 4 photo size pics on one A4 sheet.
- Limited storage to memory capacity (you can buy more memory though)

There are a few others, but I'm in no way a camera expert.

As we don't sit around with old photo's looking at times gone by, the digital was the best option for us.

Man, digital is the way to go. I just burned about a thousand pics onto a CD. I've got an old cardboard box in my closet with about 500 35mm prints. Surfing through files on a CD sure beats diggin through that box. My cheap little HP inkjet color printer and an econo-box of glossy photo paper from Costco gives me fine glossy prints (about 4x6 size and resolution is fine). Best part is that I choose which prints I want.

Rob - another opinion....

I've got the Nikon 990 digital and a couple Olympus SLR's - I thought I'd give up film cameras after getting a good digital, but just can't. Everything good said about digitals above I agree with, but the downsides are difficult to take action shots, the zooms suck vs SLR, and low light shots can be difficult. You already know what the upsides are :)

If it's possible for you - try to have both. I think digital is improving daily, but until some of the issues are sorted out, they cannot replace film yet IMO

one of the things i like to do is sit around and look at old photo's. if they were digital i doubt i'd call company over to the computer to look at a cd full of pictures. it's not as oldtimey either..

Rob,
for my digital stuff I've got the Iomega photoshow - hooks right up to the TV and has a remote and all - uses 250mb zip disks. It's pretty enjoyable way to look at pix actually and you can edit on the TV without ever leaving the couch. I think it was $250 or so.

Not to confuse your decision any, but I had the same concern when I first got my camera - looking at pix on the PC isn't a whole lot of fun.......
well except for here on the Dweb at things Garrett posts :)

rob. i can understand where you are coming from with the camera. it is alot easier flipping through 35mm pics with your buddies over beers. not that you cannot do that with a digi camera, but i rarely print them out.

ho,

i went back to the store tonight and went over all the camera's _again_

i found out the digital one i want (the one i posted a link to) has more options than i initially thought. macro, spot metereing etc.

i like the idea of 128mb memory = 1000+ pictures.. that is really appealing to me becasue i save big on film and developing.. plus it encourages me to take more pictures.

my uncle has a sweet SLR with all kinds of lens', filters and other goodies. he might sell (give) it to me for $100. if i can get this deal done i think i will get both camera's :)

i have no plan this weekend other than to own a camera..

Rob,
I like looking through the pictures too. I have a 35mm and a digital. Uploading a picture to a website and having them send you the pictures you choose is great. You have them on your computer and they will send you only the ones you choose and depending on quality will send you sizes you choose.. No more paying for pics you don't want or that turn out to be poor in quality. Anyway, my 2cents worth.

Good Luck!

ok, please... no more advise on cameras i have convined myself that the sony DCS-P50 is the camera i want.

it was the MPEG option that took me over the edge.

since i will be upgrading my memory stick to 128mb i figure if i go out wheeling i can use the 4mb on to take 40 pics and use the 1238mb to take a 5 min movie :)

on extened trips i'll just take all pictures. while on vacation i try to take a roll of photo's a day.. so i will see big savings in developing.

also they have those slick littel printers that print out 4 x 3 ish pictures... i may aquire one of those in the future.

now i need advice on the memory stick,.. hehe

lexmar sells a memory stick that is a knock off.. i found it for $54 online, vs 89 for sony brand. is there any difference?

btw i found the deals by serching on www.mysimon.com

hehehe... i decided to buy it from best buy locally and forget about the $50 that way if i have a problem i have someone to bitch at.

BUT. i get there and i find an "open box buy"

that someone returned it is this model: DCS-P1

http://www.dcresource.com/reviews/sony/dsc_p1-review/index.html

it is on clearance for $326 but it needs a batter and charger cable. + the transfer cable is missing.

my thought is i can buy this camera. then buy $100 for the battery, charger and leather case. then i get this multicard reader for $50.
http://www.compusa.com/products/product_info.asp?product_code=284933

plus i still need to buy the lexar memory stick for $50

so grand total is up to $526

the other camera was going to cost me $350.. ah but then i find out it doesnt come with the rechargable battery either,,, it takes two AA's or the sony battery, so it's still and other 100 for that one..

Slider,

I know what you mean about the Leica. I would love a Leica M6 to go along with the Disco. :-)

damn.. it's now saturday night and ididnt buy the camera.. as i said above i will have one this weekend.

i cant handle the decision... i talked to my uncle about his SLR camera and he decided he needs to keep it as the digital doesnt fulfill all his needs.

can anyone tell me from experience how many high resolution pictures you can get on a 128mb memory card? i am getting false advertising for for compressed pictures or some shit. i am dissregarding the compressed number and going with uncompressed liek this chart says.

Rob,

Like you, I am interested in the mpeg video feature - its just a neat feature to film your buddies getting stuck in mud holes - you know. But wait just a sec.... Many companies (including Sony) try to fool you into thinking they can take "up to the memory limit fast action films of 5-10 minutes. BULLSHIT!

Let me tell you - for the sonys, they have 8 frames / min (fpm) and 16 fpm modes, but the best sony (dsc 85 or something) does the 16 fpm mode for only about 10 secs or something dumb like that. If you look at an 8 fpm video, it looks crap.

Which is why I am waiting just a little longer to get the next version, which hopefully will be able to do full-res (320x240) mpeg at 16 fps and do it ALL THE WAY up to the card's limit - without interuption.

Apart from this, get a camera with a nice lense. The sony dsc series have Zeiss lenses which are amazing (Zeiss makes the best lenses out, microscope lenses, planetariums, etc).

Last advice - DON"T BUY THEM AT THE WIZ.

with a 128 mb card i would imagine you can get still get about 200 pics out of this using the SHQ (super high quality) mode. or whatever your camera maker calls it. i mean i have a bunch of old 8 mb cards for an olympus and i can get 90 sq (standard qual.), 25 hq (high quality) and 9 or so shq (super high qual.) pictures. i have seen others with less mb than your 128 get a few hundred + of HQ pics.......not the lowest res or highest.

but once you start getting over that many pics on a memory stick your download time to your PC gets pretty long.

but at least with a 128 you should not really have to worry about using too many pics. and you can always at a later time get an extra memory stick (smaller) and have it with you if you DO need more memory.

When our baby was born last June, my wife bought the Sony MVC-CD200.

It's awesome. The little CD's can be popped into our Mac immediately. The pic quality is good. It takes short movies.

Having the midget around, you just keep taking pics and delete the ones you don't like. When we want hard copies, we upload to Ofoto and get prints in 48 hours.

It's nice being able to run out, take a pic, and upload it immediately. With the CD's at about $0.25 each, I can take 3 pics, burn the CD and not worry about waste.

It's not 35MM, but it's good stuff.
