My 96 Disco 1 was overheating while heading uphill offroad this weekend. I noted that the cooling fan would shut off before the engine was cooled to a normal temperature. What is the part that regulates the operation of this fan?

Thanks,

shuts off? electric fans would have a thermostat. It could be bad (or a wiring problem), others with DI's will add more detail on the where/how part. I just have DII's.

The D1 have a Fan Thermal Switch that controls both of the electric fans on the front of the radiator. This unit is mounted on the side of the Thermostat housing it has a two prong connector that could have come loose. For the main fan the Viscous Coupling controls the tension of the fan; therfore, controlling its ability to cool the engine. A good test for the Viscous is test the tension of the fan when the car is hot and when its cold, if its the same at both temperatures than its probably bad. For the electric fans, both of them should come on when the AC is turned on, also when your temperature reads high the fans should be on. I have heard that the fans would stay on after you shut down the car if the engine is trully hot, but on min a D1-95 they don't???

Mine (D1 96') was overheated last week. It took me a few times to find the problem. It was a bad fuse in the engine bay. Tony: they shut down if you close engine.

But what's the deal if the fan keeps running after the engine is off, or when it's on and it needs some more cooling?
