My front drive shaft blew apart this morning on the highway and managed to put a hole in my transmission. the dc joint is what broke. I should have upgraded the shaft when i did the lift, but didnt think it would go on the highway and kill my trans. So it looks like im going to need at least a new trans housing if not a completely new setup. Since im out of warranty i will have to pay for everything. If i need a new trans, is there an aftermarket one available? A 5-speed would be awesome. or should i just get a used one from roversland or another place? How difficult is the instalation? If the dealer gives me too much of a rediculous quote I will probably do it myself. |

There should be a recall for those non-servicable joints put into the DC shafts of the D2. Sorry to hear that it took out your transmission. It's very common on D2's. Lifted or not. |

I have heard of them breaking before. The reply from the dealer was, "your out of warranty" If anyone has any info on the recall, it would be greatly appreciated. I couldnt find anything on findlaw.com. |

That SUCKS...mine blew out at 25k. It took out my transmission, t-case and both cats. it seems that the cats generate a hugh amount of heat and cook the grease out of the "non-servicable" u-joints. I put a custom front shaft in and have to grease it about every 1000 miles. there's no recall, i would call lrna and raise cain...and look for a used transmission, there were a couple of low mile ones on ebay... frank |

hey guys, I've already called NHTSA's DEFECTS INVESTIGATION unit about this DRIVE SHAFT FAILURE disaster. the number is 1-888-327 4236--I encourage all D2 owners to do so even if you haven't had the problem. I would be shocked if a recall does not come about within the next few months. |

Rick, Did it hole the trans or the trans pan? If it was just the pan I would just replace it. If there is a hole in the trans, if it were me I would take it to someone with a TIG and have them weld it up, putting a plate over it if necessary, kind of hack but better than $$$$ for a trans and RandR time. If I were really cheap I would JB weld the trans shut. Ron |
