can you still use all the existing parts from the 4.0 to the 4.6, or do you have to get a new transmision and computer etc..

The main mechanical differences between a 4.0 and a 4.6 are the connecting rods, crankshaft, and pistons. Other than that, it's a pretty straight forward swap, on a 96 and newer. My Autologic diagnostic equipment allows me to switch engine mapping from 4.0 to 4.6 with the push of a button.
My Disco is a 94 , which is a distributor engine, and that required some other minor mods. Feel free to contact me with any questions.

I am in the early stages of converting a 3.9 RRC to a 4.6 torque monster myself. The 4.6 block is the essential ingrediant. Will assemble the entire engine before dropping it in. Also converting from fan belts to serpentine belt engine front.

You need a large, clean, well equipt workshop. Need reference books. Lots of late night hours keeping me out of trouble.

"allows me to switch engine mapping from 4.0 to 4.6 with the push of a button"

Does this work on GEMS discos?

the sleeve dropped about 1/8"+ and the top of the piston has been falling apart for some time. still ran good, but with low compression=less power.
looks like the surface of a greasy diner grill.

Randall,

I'll be doing teh same thing shortly. Trying to come up with another engine stand so that I have both side by side! Let me know your progress.

4.0 to 4.6l is a direct drop in as far as installation. However you wont have any extra power until you change the gems ecu to 4.6l parameters. You will need to find someone near you with a Rovacom and they can adjust the ecu for the 4.6 fuel mapping. The programming is in the ecu it just has to know which engine you have. Brett

There have been other comments lately indicating that the GEMS computer can be switch to 4.6 mapping. This is entirely possible. My Optimax chip(which is for the earlier CUX system) has two programs on it(3 if you count limp home mode).

You really need the computer custom programmed to match the mods made to the engine. Also the main purpose of OEM fuel injection is to meet govt regulations. A lot more can be accomplished with these systems than satifying the feds.

I did it last year to my 96 disco and love it. worth every penny. Must do the chips so it runs right or you will go lean and burn up the motor again. The head bolt on, but check the rockers for any damage. The old ones tend to wearout and metal flowing around a new engine, Bad.
