Changed the front diff oil a month or so ago and ever since then three of the bolts near the bottom seem to be slowly loosening on their own. Seemed strange but anyway; any suggestions like maybe Loctite? Thanks, Aaron 99 D2 |

On a D1 they are nyloc nuts, so should only be used onace and if used again - definitely with some loctite - blue would be good for this app. Bill |

Aaron, mine were doing the same thing. I put blue on 'em and now check 'em every time I grease the props (about every 1K miles). |

Aaron, just make sure you put the LocTite, etc near the head of the bolt. The housing is thin and if you put it near the end of the bolt, when it's completely threaded in, the adhesive will not be in the threads of the housing. |

Aaron, I watched the oil being changed in my diffs last weekend. I was told that the bolts on my diffs are magnetized. Tech demonstrated this by sticking a bolt onto another part of the underbody. He said one of the things to watch for down there are little metal shavings. Any shavings will stick to the other parts. Little shavings are ok. If they get to the size of toothpicks - it is a sign of trouble. I don't know if that means bolt trouble or diff trouble? Just passing along what little info I have Good Luck, Jamie |

Jamie, The drain plug on the diffs are magnetized. The theory behind this is that metal shavings are drawn to the drain plug and removed when the diff fluid is changed. If you find toothpick-sized shavings on your diff drain plug, it means your diffs are in trouble. The metal shavings are your diffs wearing out. -Eugene |

Thanks Eugene, I'll have to go take another look under my truck so I can see the bolts too. I thought the drain plugs were bolts as you can probably tell. When diff oil was being changed, my bigget concern was breather hoses since that had been a topic on a recent wading thread. Turns out my D2 already has them. Tech was going to show me where breather hose came up into the engine when he got my truck down from lift - but, we both forgot. You wouldn't happen to know where it comes up would you? Do you know if water is heavier than synthetic diff oil? Can condensation build up in diff oils? If it does, can you drain just the water out? I'm not asking this in regards to wading - I'm wondering about everyday normal condensation since tech also told me that diffs are sealed. Thanks Much, Jamie |

Jamie, The trucks have breather tubes on them already. There are four breather tubes: 1) front diff, 2) rear diff, 3) transfer case, 4) transmission. The issue is that the stock breather locations are not necessarily the best ones, especially if you wade in deep water. Becuase of this, many people here have opted to extend their breather tubes. On a D2, the front diff breather is near the top of the engine firewall (driver's side). The rear diff breather location depends on the model year of your D2. Late '02 and '03 D2s have the rear diff breather tube end at the LH tail lamp. Older D2s (I'm told) have a much more vulnerable breather location. Do a search for "diff breather" and there will be many threads covering locations, how to extend, etc. -Eugene |
