Anyone have this annoying noise coming from the steering wheel when turning. I have lubed up both ends inside of the car and outside with greese and with spray lubricants but still get the noise. It seems like some plastic parts are rubbing together, but I cannot get access to this area. Is anyone else experiencing this problem and is there a fix???

Is the steering cowl rubbing? I have heard the steering shaft boot at the firewall make a noise and the rotary coupler can do it too.

I think its the shaft boot at the firewall, a quick lube job gets the noise to stop but after a cold night the noise is back in the morning. I even tried to push some grease inside the boot but something is rubbing together? Mike, do you know if the shaft boot is easily removable so I can actually inspected and lubricate it properly???

Hi,

If you're talking about a squeeking noise, like plastic or rubber on rubber, I'm getting it too.

I hadn't heard the noise since last winter, but since the night time temps started to dip lower it suddenly appeared.

Once the interior of the car warms up it seems fine (or the radio's too loud to hear it).

NO DOUBT! I have sprayed dry silicon to no avail. I have tried to source the sound to the firewall, but seems to be coming from the dash area. ANY IDEAS???

On early Discos this noise comes from the plastic steering cowl rubbing on the steering wheel.
Turn the steering wheel and apply a bit of vasaline between the back of the steering wheel and the ignition cowl.
cheers
