Hey all, My viscous blew on my BW box and I am not sure what to do. If I can find a cheap viscous I can have it put it for around $300.00 but, I also have two LT-230 boxes sitting on the garage floor. Would I be better off to swap out for one of those? One is from a DII and does not have CDL the other is out of a D1 and has CDL. What is required to change out in order to swap for one of these units? My rig is a 1992 RRC. Looking for thoughts on this... She's dead in the drive... |

what you want to do with the RR also may impact your decision. the BW in snow/rain is a great combination. a locking center diff is better on something like climbing around/over rock ledges. it will fit, yet, there is additional work like the linkage to make work. not that it probably makes a rats ass of difference in your decision process, I'm going with the LT230 in my RR. Fit the D1 LT230 - no question You'll need a D1 front DS, output shaft from a D1 ZF autobox, tcase mounts, and the linkage of course. Lots of discussions on this in the archives here and also on POR Bill |

Bill, does it mean you have to take apart the ZF to swap the tailshaft? |

It takes about 4 hours to do a viscous unit with the box in the car. Ashcroft transmissions in the uk will mail you one. It works out about $800 AUD ($560 us) |

Peter - no the ZF tailshaft comes off with one 17mm bolt - pretty slick really. Unbolt old tailshaft and bolt on new. Bill |

Bill are you sure about the tailshaft requirement? I haven't seen this in other posts on the swap (assuming you get the LT230 from an automatic D1). What I have seen needed for swap: - LT230T transfer case from D1 (D2 doesn't have the speed sensor socket); leave parking brake attached. - transfer case mounts - linkage - driveshaft Thanks. |

It depends on the year of the LT230 and the RR. I have a tailshaft if you need one. evilfij(at) yahoo.com Ron |

swap it out. easy to change out VC than drop the box and change to LT230. Nothing against the LT230 as it is better all around but why go through all that trouble for just a VC. Gordo |

unless he has an early LT230 2in tail will not fit into a 3in LT230 |
