Ok, Here it is '95 Disco, 141,000 miles. After the truck has set for a few hours (Gone cold), or overnight, I come out and start driving, and it doesn't want to shift to a higher gear. I can push it up to red line and it will shift, and work fine for the rest of the time I drive it. Any Suggestions? Am I in for a new transmission? Throttle position Sensor? Whhhhhaaaaattttt! It's ok, I am getting used to Land Rover ownership! |

Most probably an oil problem if it's an autobox. Change both oil and filter..... Joey |

It happens usually with cold, when a valve controlling the shifting gets stuck stopping a change or sticking the truck in neutral. My truck has done a similar thing after every fluid change, and occasionally when cold. That started 40k ago, don't worry about it. Suggest that you give the truck a little longer (nothing extreme 10 -20 secs with the transmission in neutral to warm the fluid up. |

When warming up a cold transmission I read once you can put the transfer case in neutral and the transmission in drive to spin it up and warn it up. Is this correct or will I do some damage?? |

I'll give the fluid and filter change a go first. It seems like a possible fix for the least amount of investment. Thanks! Mike |

Don't think reving it makes any odds......whats going on is that the govenror valves are getting stuck...and with me a fluid/filter change triggers this "bad" behavior for 24-48 hours..as if the change loosens gunk that then gets caught in the filter..I now do 15k fluid changes and even putting synthetic in with a draining and refill several times so the fluid is almost 100% fresh... Suspect its just part of a ZF box's way of life....These boxes do seem pretty strong....me Mum back in england just replaced a renault auto transmission at 40k |

It's the gov. valve that is sticking. When cold it's at it's worst. When changing the filter, go a little deeper in the trans and clean the valves. Check out the trans section in the repair manual and it will explain what is going on. This was in one of the Land Rover mags I read during the last year. If that does not work, rebuild time. ZF are great trans!! |

I saw on Rovers South the rebuild kits for $480. Is this a good price? |

You might want to check out your kickdown/pressure cable adjustment before doing anything drastic... If the cable is too tight, it makes the gearbox think that you are giving the vehicle more throttle than you actually are, which can give you very delayed upshifts. It doesn't just affect kickdown. |

If it were the Kickdown/Preassure cable, wouldn't the problem stay? After it shifts once, the problem goes away. Also, allowing the transmission to "warm up" in neutral before going appears to help. I appreciate all of you guys help! |

I think the Rovers Down South kit is for the R380. |

Mike: Auto rebuilds are for the experts and even my mechanic wont touch it since there is little call for it on Rovers... Trust me it will last a long time as is. Just keep the filter/fluid up to date and it will keep on going. Its all part of the trucks character and warmer weather will stop if from happening |

Mike: Dang Fl....glad to read the warm up approach helps out. You're so close to the 150k fluid filter change I'd be tempted to do it now with a drain and refill a couple of times with a new filter... then adjust your servicing to accomodate the change in schedule... You might experience the changing problems for a couple of days after the filter change but I suspect that it will act normally after that Good luck |

OK, Here's the final fix. Went to Land Rover of Palm Beach. They hit me for $92 for the Transmission Filter, O Rings, and gasket (Ouch!) Changed fluid and filter, problem has gone away. I'll change the fluid again in a couple of weeks and hopefully will be running fresh fluid in the thing after a couple of times doing that. Thanks for all the help guys. Mike |

Not sure if it helps - but a garage local to me offered a service where they inject hot transmission fluid into the box - with the drain open - flushes the whole thing out - I had it done on my old Isuzu and it worked really well. Jeff |
