hi all,
has anybody swapped out their locking fuel door (D1 models, not sure about D2)?
I, for one, can't stand taking the key out when filling up. I imagine someone out here knows that a non-locking filler doof latch from a 1954 gremlin or something happens to fit!

cheers,
carl

Carl, it's a simple safety issue.
It forces you to switch off the engine while fuelling , the only safe way to do it.

It's also more difficult for someone to carjack your vehicle at the gas station if you don't leave the key in the ignition while pumping.

i appreciate the safety issues, however the newer trucks do have the release switch, i believe. obviously it is switched off, and the keys removed in sketchy parts of town. most times, however, it would be nice not to have to take the key out...
oh well. i guess i'll just take the key out...
cheers,
carl

I agree with carl, what is the answer? One time my fuel door lock was frozen! had to pour water over it to get the key in! Thinking about a way to reverse the spring so it holds it closed! But doesn't seen to be able to work that way, I guess that more research is needed! Anyone have the answer?
Peter.

Keep a spare key loose in the car, and use that?

I agree with earlier posts -- no one's driving away a car with no key in it. Not without being noticed at least.

Also helps save you from people putting crap in your gas tank, or worse stealing your gas.

Try replacing the key lock with a quarter turn (Dzus) fastener or a pushbutton.

Or move to NJ where you can't pump your own gas, hand the key to the attendant and let him deal with it..... :-)

oregon has the same law.. they said the reason is to create jobs in the rural areas of the state. what could be the reason for not letting you pump gas in NJ??

Could be, I don't really know. I have heard everything from job creation to safety reasons. Don't know why it would be safe for me to pump my gas in New York state, but not safe to do it in New Jersey, though.
