I was listening under the hood today and noticed that one of the pulleys, maybe the tensioner or water pump is rather squeaky. I dont know if the bearing are just drying out or what is going on. Has this happened to anyone? What action should I take. I will be replacing the serpentine belt in just a few days and thought that would be a convenient time to look into thinks. Can I repack the bearings on these pulleys? Thanks.

The bearings do dry out for the tensioner pulley. I think Atlantic British has a replacement/rebuild kit. Do a search here too.

Andy,

Please let us know how you get on and anything you learn along the way.
I have the same issue, but it is almost impossible to tell where the sound is coming from, although it appears only sometimes at idle.

I know I'm bad... but turning a large dial next to some numbers in the middle of the dash all the way to the right makes the squeek go away, very strange?

Get a mechanics stethescope or a long screwdriver and put it against all possible part off of the S-Belt and you will hear which part is going bad. That way you know what you need.

Did some more looking around, and listening with a nursing stethescope. Thats a loud engine! Anyhow, its either the idler pulley or tensioner. I had the tensioner off when I did the head gaskets and it looked fine. That was 20k ago, so maybe its the idler. Any hints on a repack job on this- my manual said nothing. Glyn, I hear ya, I'm no stranger to the red zone.

I believe it is only rebuildable on the 94 thru 96 models....at least that is what I was told.

I had the same problem, I just finished changing
out my idler pulley. I got mine from DAP for $155 and it took a little time going in but the sound is gone.

So, if it is my idler pulley making the noise, is that bad? I can only hear it with the hood up.

Probably the Rh idler pulley on a DII. The revised part number is PQR500060 and the new pulley is made of metal. It was a common enough problem that LR made a new part. Even if this is not bad it is a good idea to change this with the belt removal because it will be a future problem.

My Aussie 98 LS 3.9 V8 idler squeeked.
I removed, undid ciclip, pushed out bearing, went to bearing shop, bought new $4 bearing, preseed in using socket and vice, etc etc . No more squeek.

I too replaced just the bearing mentioned this past spring and eliminated the sound. About $5 at NAPA and 40 minutes or so...

Thanks for the advise, I think that I am going to try to salvage the pulley by replacing the bearings. I'll let you know how it goes.

Andy just be aware that the circlip on the back of the pulley holding the bearing in is a bit tedious to get off - you'll need a very small screwdriver or two - unless you have the special circlip pliers...

Also if you get the pulley warm (or room temp) and have kept the new bearing in a ziploc in the freezer for a few hours it will be much easier to press in (from LRO May '03 edition)

Good Luck

If you have the original pulley on a D2, replace it! even if the bearings hold up the pulley will chip, shred your serpentine belt and leave you stranded! ask me how I know... why LR put a plastic pulley on an 8,000 dollar engine I'll never know.
