Brakes seem to be working OK. Hit some ice, ABS kicked in, lot's o clicking and some grinding like noises. Just didn't sound right, any ideas?

Nick,

If you don't have a lot of experience with ABS it can sound/feel like something is wrong, but then again there could be something wrong.

What year is your truck and when did you have your brakes done last.

99 DI, brakes checked out OK for PA Inspection last March. This is my first experience with 4 wheel ABS and they do seem to work OK...just some wacky sounding noises.

They really make a lot of noise when they are working.
If you passed in March, you may very well be due for brakes, though.

You'll hear pretty loud whirring and clicking noises when ABS is operating. You could find a safe icy spot and hit the brakes hard and see if the noise recurs consistently. I'd guess you're hearing the normal sounds.

There is easier way to get that feeling, than to do it on road or worst - on icy patches. Just put your truck on jack stands, turn it on, apply wee bit of gas and then brakes, after speed goes up. Its nearly same situation as on icy patch - your wheels turns, but no traction found, so ABS kicks in to prevent wheel locking and potentially hazardous situation.

Yes - and that grinding, shredding sound (you can also feel through the brake pad) is "normal"

ABS sucks in the snow and ice. The feeling you are getting through the pedal is normal under those circumstances. When I first got my truck I had the same concern. I now remove the fuse under the hood to disable the ABS when in the mud, snow, ice, etc...
