Hi,

I've just moved to Phuket in Thailand and bought my first Discovery, a 96 V8i ES with 30,000 miles.

It has front and rear AirCon, which is OK but not briliant with just the front AC on but not very good at all with the rear AC on as well. As the temperatures are in the mid to high 30's (90-100F) in the shade and I've come from the highest town in England.. aircon is quite important.

I've just been into a local Aircon shop, who regassed with very little difference, and recommend that the aircon isn't really man enough for these temperatures.

Their suggestion is to fit an additional condensor with 2 addiaional fans, this would work in addition to the standard condensor. Has anyone had this done or got any thoughts on it?

I'm having it done tomorrow morning, the price (I love Thailand :-) ) is £90 (U$150) for all parts and labour, but would love to hear peoples views

Paul

Never heard of doing this. My '97 with front and rear air, cools my disco very nicely in the 90 to 100F range - No issues at all.

for the price it is hard to argue...
i have the rear ac also and never a problem (less heat here in boston, of course). i thought there was a second compressor in the rear already?
eager to hear your result.
cheers,
carl

Paul keep us infromed. I have a 97 with front and rear AC and it will not handle the heat here in Arizona. I have had it looked at a few times and every time Im told its fine.

never heard of doing this either...I'd suggest that you make absolutly certain that the A/C is working properly. With only front A/C my Disco keep up with the Texas heat just fine. Well if you parked in the sun all day it took it a while to cool off the big ol' interior, but it really did work very well. It was always serviced at the dealer, Land Rover Dallas, I don't think i'd go with any suggestion from another shop to start modifying the factory systems. If they're not working (and this vehicle was built for the world market) i'd assume there was a problem with the parts and not the design.
Yes, let use know how it works out,
Good Luck in your cool new local!!!

Not to get too hung-up on the temperature issue, but I wonder how much the perception of how well the AC works at any given temp is the humidity.

Where I am, in Toronto, the summer temperatures range from 20C to 35C, but the Humidex (the perceived temperature with temp and humidity) makes it feel like 45C.

People visiting from Africa have had a hard time here with the combination of temp and humidity.

I think Thailand may be a fairly warm and damp country.

Well it's been done!
Took them 4.5 hours and only cost 70GBP (120U$)

AND IT WORKS, the air is definitely cooler, before hand the pipe coming out of the condensor was still very hot, the pipe out of the 2nd condensor is much cooler, sowhen it expands its colder still, I can now run both aircon units and get lots of very cold aiur out of both.

I'll post details of what exactly was done later

A cool Paul ;-)
