Where the steering shaft from the steering wheel connects to the steering box is this the input or output.

This is the input shaft.
The output shaft is the one on the drop arm and steering bar.

has anyone replaced a leaky steering box by just replacing the seals. Iīm thinking if that will solve my problem instead of buying a brand new unit.

Peter I am going to give it a shot. I know people advise against it but my input seal is leaking the seal set is like 50.00 so I really won't lose that much if it does not work. Here is a link for the parts. http://catalog.speedycarparts.com/?year=1995&make=RO

Yes, you can replace the seals for about $30 with kit. I did it twice and both times lasted about 10k miles before leaks came back. I finally bought a reman Meridian box and no leaks since.

mine doesnīt seem to be leaking from where all the hoses connect. itīs pretty clean on top actually. then I checked the power steering fluid and that appears to be fine. so naybe it is a seal that will do the job, but it has 80k on it so possibly a new one is in order.

When replacing the input shaft seal you will need a piece of tube or a long reach socket to fit over the input shaft to knock the seal into place.
I think it needs to be about 2 inch long and the diameter of the seal.

i've never taken it a part but i've heard that the reason seals kits dont last long is that land rover uses a brass bushing for the lower shaft and after time this bushing gets out of round and oil leaks thru the slot created.

meridian claims to replace this with ball bearing bushing to prevent future leaks.

i have had the only meridian box i've heard of that leaked. mine leaked out of the top plate. clearly it weas a bad seal up there. they sent me a new one but it was a hassle because they still charged me a core charge until they got there old defective one back. that was not the best service, but otherwise not bad for the discounted price.

greg, i've toyed with the idea of going to an old unassisted power steering system just so i dont have to do that job again.

PA curse i dont know.. it could just be me.

My steering box that was a brand new one as of two weeks ago crapped out on me today. I was out on a trail and all of a sudden it started leaking horribly, was empty of fluid in about 10 min. Turns out the fluid is coming out from the adjusting screw on the top of the box. Could maybe the lock nut just not have been tight enough? Or is there a seal under it that could be bad? Any help would be appreciated.
