I use Outlook Express for my email. Is there a way I can access my email account from another computer? If so, how

thanks

It depends...... :-)

If you have a standard home ISP, then when you access the account, the mail program should download your email, and delete it off of the server.

If your ISP allows, you can use use some websites like "webmail" to access your account and can read any new emails that have arrived and haven't been downloaded to your home computer. Once you have downloaded the emails, though, you can't remotely access them that way.

Our office at work uses Outlook, and with it, I can log in through the firewall, and access my Outlook mail account there. But, it's a more sophisticated system, being a government agency.

However, it's possible for you to set up your computer so you could remotely access it. You really need to know what you're doing to do it, though, and not open yourself up to all hosts of gremlins.... :-)

FWIW.....

Most ISP's these days use IMAP or a form of IMAP that will keep the mail on the server but managed by the client. Therefore the mail isn't deleted on the server side unless you delete it from the client or the mail expires. POP downloaded the mail and removed it from the server unless you setup the client to keep a copy on the server. Outlook (LookOut) is one of the least secure options to POP or IMAP the mailbox but it's widely available. There are many others out there too.

Matt, contact your ISP for the servers that you need to point to. Some cable companies will only allow you to retrieve mail when you're on their network to reduce the risk of spammers using them as a relay. Others will use authentication based mail relay and others will only allow remote access via a webmail client as Leslie described. Bottom line you should ask your ISP how you can get your mail from another computer.
