There's some discussion about popups on this thread:

../17/30097.html>

as it pertains to IE and Messenger.

I tried it but didn't really notice any significant difference. I got so sick of popups I switched to Netscape 7.1. Haven't seen a popup or spyware on my computer since. Not really what you're looking for Thom but the difference is quite signficant and the software is free.

The messenger popup isn't related to web popups and is a whole other security hole in XP and Win2k. AOL began blocking it at the request of members then later Microsoft followed suit and turned off the service as an update.

For those of you who run Windows XP, the next service pack (SP2) will offer pop-up blocking.

Microsoft just released SP2 for testing, so it should be arriving to Windows Update fairly soon.

That being said, Netscape 7 or Mozilla 1.5 (1.6 beta for those who like to be cutting-edge) are terrific.

Deleting cookies and clearing history doesn't do much to prevent popups. They'll come back.

Like Al said, those changes refer mostly to the Messenger side of things so if you don't chat a lot, you're not going to see a big difference in popup frequency. I think the biggest impact will be switching to a non-Microsoft product. So much of what's on the web is geared towards MS including security attacks, spamming and popups.

Hopefully you figure something out Thom as there's nothing more annoying than chasing down popups.

I agree. Disable Messaging and Google Toolbar with the pop-up blocker on is a winning combo. Also check out software called SpyBot (some prefer Adware and both are free) that scan your system for hidden spyware.

http://www.netscape.com Also Free :-)

AFAIK, XP SP2 won't be available until Q3 of 2004 (at best) so don't expect it anytime soon.

Also for those of you on MSIE here is another potential security problem and with the eBay worm going around it's even more of an issue IMO.

Maybe this would be a good place to ask about an annoying computer problem I have recently encountered.

No pop ups thankfully.

However, for the last 3 weeks I have been getting at least 2 emails per day regarding a male pharmacuetical prescription product. I've never opened any of the emails - I have been deleting them immediately them when I read the subject line.

Prior to this, I never had junk mail. Does anyone know how to get rid of it??

Thanks in advance, Jamie

Not a lot you can do there. Your email address must have some how ended up on a spam list somewhere. If you're running Outlook, you can run the "Rules Wizard" or the "Junk Email" wizard to block these addresses. I just run a general email rule that looks for specific words that filters them directly to my deleted items box or permanently delete them. For sites that require an email, I usually give them a hotmail address that I can dump when it gets out of hand or I'll sometimes make up a bogus address that satisfies their requirement. My personal address I rarely use except for people I want to give it out to. Might want to try something like that but whatever you do, don't reply to these garbage emails. Replying only confirms your address to them.

Jamie, if you're on AOL (based on your profile) upgrade to 9.0 if you're not there already. There are very good spam fighting tools on the 9.0 client that are based on what you consider spam. Just click on the report spam button. The tool learns what you consider spam and what's good email. That way if you don't want pharmacuetical mail but like the porn mail it will give you the porn but not the drugs. :-)
