Just purchased my first Discovery, an 03 DII. While bringing it home yesterday, I noticed it has a bit of a high pitch whine between 72~76 MPH. Is this normal?

Secondly, while at the dealership I had a wiring harness installed (I assume OEM) and I have a round plug receptacle that seems to be a non-standard round plug. It also came with an adapter to take it to 4 wire flat. In order to connect to my standard American round snowmobile/boat trailer plug, am I going to have to convert from the flat 4 wire to standard round? If so - what's a good source for this adapter?

they almost all whine

are you refering to standard round as a 6 pole electric braking system?

the flat 4 is what you will use on most trailers in the pulling class of a disco...if the trailers have brakes then they are either hydraulic serge type that would have the flat 4 style plug or electric brakes that have the 6 pole round with a keyway . this type of electric braking system will need a cab monted control unit and would need to be installed aftermarket.

Walmart, Uhaul etc should have your adaptor.

Mike,

I just went through the trailer harness issue. The plug on the LR kit is a European 7-pin. American trailers w/ electric brakes use a 7-pin commonly referred to as an "RV style" plug. It is not the same as the Euro 7-pin. To use the LR harness, you'll first install your LR round to flat 4-pin converter. Then you need to purchase an RV to 4-flat converter, to allow the RV connection from your trailer to connect to your 4-flat adaptor. In addition, you need to pull a separate lead from the brake controller, and a ground - as the LR round does not have a provision for this. And, of course you'll need to install an electric brake controller.

The necessary adaptors are available at NAPA, Northern, etc., every trailer dealer that I talked to wouldn't touch a Rover. Land Rover Denver South installed my controller, and supplied all of the necessary adaptors (from NAPA). Feel free to email me jackparker@ski-wp.com and I can try and send more detailed instructions, pictures, etc., or get you in touch with the guy at LRDS, or have your dealership contact them.

I was pressed for time and couldn't do it myself. It's a pain in the ass, especially compared to the '04 Suburban I just bought. The Suburban allows you to basically just plug in and go. And it tows a hell of a lot better than the Disco - the short wheelbase of the Disco isn't as nice for towing as the 130" of the Suburban.

Good luck.

Thanks guys for all of the suggestions. The boat trailer has hydraulic surge brakes, and I found an adapter in my box of junk in the garage for it. The snowmobile trailer is brand new, and I need to check what the brake options are on it. I may need to get in touch with you Jack and maybe get some additional information.

Actually, my wife has an 04 Suburban also - so i may just use that for pulling the snowmobile trailer, but then I have to leave her the LR ;-)

My wife wanted another Volvo wagon, which I did like, but with kids, dog, trailers, boats, etc., I got tired of packing that and a Yakima Rocket Box. And, while the Disco is great off road, the things that make it great off road, limit it's ability as a towing machine. The Suburban is nice because you don't "pack" anything, you just throw it in and go:-) It's also a great long trip cruiser.

She's almost used to parking the beast, and so far, both bumpers are intact.

If you have surge brakes, and not electric you should be fine without the brake controller, and a basic 4-flat to RV adaptor should work fine.

How do you like the Suburban??

This will be our fourth Suburban, and it seems to fit our mission profile very well. Firstly, we are in Northern Lower Michigan so we get our fair share of winter weather, and we have three kids in everything imaginable (sports, etc.). We snowmobile in the winter, and and boat and motorcycle in the summer.

Every Suburban we've owned has been totally maintenence free, and very comfortable and stable. Really the only complaint would be gas mileage, however it is typical for this profile of vehicle. My life just loves it.

If you have any additional info (that you can get to easily) on the wiring harness / brake controller - please just email to mike@homenrc.com .

Thanks!

Mike D.
