I’ve been a Disco owner for six months and while I've been prepared for the wrench turning I was warned about, I have found my Rover to be very reliable with only a few small issues to address. I currently have 124K miles; 10K of which I’ve added in the past six months. I’ve watched this board during this entire time and have seen countless posts knocking the earlier Disco’s. Issues about engines, transmissions and electrical system malfunctions seem to pervade the board. Do I own a freak of nature or is the storm yet to come? I love my 95 Disco so far and find its performance as good and reliable as my 95 Toyota Land Cruiser. The only explanation I can think of is the first owner did all the preventative maintenance and when I purchased the truck I continued this servicce trend and switched to Royal Purple synthetics.

Knock on aluminum; I hope this trend continues.

LR QC processes weren't the best at that time. The old maint' schedules were pretty much ridiculous, they had you coming into the dealer very frequently (don’t recall the interval), but it has slaked up with the newer models. To me it seemed LR used its dealers as a final inspection/correction process to fix what the factory didn’t quite get right. Mine is an earlier 96, and for the first year those boys in Anchorage did silly amounts of work to it when I brought it down for it’s scheduled maint’. It always ran fine, but they practically replaced everything. Made me very nervous to be off warranty – but so far it hasn’t been too bad. If you haven’t heard it a hundred times on these BBs keep your fluids and stuff changed, and keep up with the scheduled maint’ or in our case the reoccurring maint’ and you just might be surprised how well your Disco will do!

Its a solid truck all around. I have owned a 95 for 5 yrs. with very minor issues. I also own a 94 with 168k with no issues...and my best friend has a 94 with 175k still going strong.

The 3.9 was and still is a very solid motor. As far as the trans is concerned it is the same and the only real difference in the tfer case was minor in order to reduce noise. The 3.9 was good enough to run in the Rangies from 89-95.

I personally like the set up as well ....the truck is very friendly for the weekend mechanic....
In all honesty besides faulty sensors and electrical issues some of the gripes folks have regarding their rovers surprise me.

Or maybe I am to brainwashed...I should have known something was wrong with me when I snatched my key ring out of my girlfriends hand the other day and shouted "MY PPPPRRREEEEEEEEEECCCIOOUSSSSS"

Stay with synthetics - diff.'s, engine, g-box, t-case. Stay with the green coolant. Change the transmission fluid every 30K and it ought to last well past the life of the engine - if not serviced, expect around 150K.

Eric - why green? I swapped mine to orange recently, but if green is better i am all up to do full flush again :-)

The problem that i have found with my 95 is a hard to diagnose (initially) coil pick up unit in the Dizzy and the stepper motor that needs cleaning occasionally. Not really hard to deal with. Otherwise the truck is bullet proof and fun to drive on weekends when i step out of my 2002 DII.

You're not alone. Thankfully my '94 Disco has been very reliable as well. Too bad my wife wants me to sell it...she only has 92,000 miles. (The car, not the wife :-)

Brett,
I'm part of the crowd that has to scratch my head at the early (to the U.S.) Disco bashing. I've had my 94 for a little over a year, she's got 143k on the clock and I've only had a few problems with her that weren't self induced. I think its a great testimony to the vehicle that she's been on a tow truck less than my 02 Jetta has in that same time period.
Will's post about the truck being well setup for the weekend mechanic is very true-b/c that's me in a nutshell. I like the simplicity, and quite frankly, the forgiving nature that comes with the simplicity.

Those of us who bought them new worked very hard to repair (under warranty) all those problems for you. Most likely a lot has already been fixed.

i have to agree 95 disco's are rock solid if you treat them right, if you dont you will be ending up dropping a new transmission in, but they are weekend mechanic friendly if you have the time and money to find the parts. mine has 101k on it and the motor and new transmission run like a champ

TLC is all what the 95 needs...

195k on a 95 D1 and no fear to go thousands of miles away through 12,000 ft mountain passes and other rocky trails. I do carry a tool box though...and had to open it only once in 15k miles for a very minor issue.

I have to agree on the less technical layout of the 3.9 engine. I have found it very easy to work on and service. Maybe some of us purchased trucks made by sober line workers that didn't spend most of the night at the pub. Or like Christopher said, by the time we bought them, everything had been fixed that plagued these early discos. For whatever reason, I have really come to like what my nearly stock disco can do on the trail. However, I'm not quite ready to sell my Land Cruiser yet. ;)
