If you resize those big pictures down to 640x480 or smaller, your site wont close down nearly as much. :)

My poor G is sitting in my driveway now, with nobody to drive it, because I have my license suspended until Late July! Now doesn't that suck!? Ohh.. the loss of license story... it sucks... well one day I was going to my grandma's house, & I got going a little fast, down a hill, and a stupid cop was sitting at the bottom, and caught me doing 70 in a 35 (my first ticket)... so now its suspended until july 29th.. I won't have my driver's license back until i'm 17! and i turn 17 on july 17th... and that's also the day i get my private pilot's license... kinda funny huh... i'll be able to fly before i can drive again...

I got my first speeding ticket, the day I turned 17, in my mom's "SUV." The officer said that I was doing 75mph on an entrance ramp (!), I thought it was a bunch of crap. Unfortunately I wasn't looking at the speedometer, so I couldn't argue with him, but I am pretty sure that I wasn't doing 75. My conclusion was that it was the end of April, so the officers have to give out a certain amount of tickets before the end of the month in order to bring food to the table. Also I was in a town with a population of 5000, so us "big city" folk are not well liked down there. Maybe the fact that I was driving a BMW at the age of 17 with 3 other teens in the car could have something to do with it. But I paid, from my Disco fund $, and now I am in defensive driving. I am thankful I drive a Disco, because the only way I could go 75 on an entrance ramp is on a downward slope with a strong tailwind and my foot on the floor on 4th.

Yeah my dad has a 1966 AC Cobra.. i dont have a page up on that yet, because i just haven't had any time to do it.. but if you want to take a look at it, the person he bought it from has the whole history and pictures of it at http://www.pacific.net/~brooke & then click on Cobra CSX3282

Mel: I KNOW i wasn't going 70 in a 35.. i only have a 3.0L straight 6 in my 5,000lb truck, 170hp total.. no way in hell i could get it goin that fast, but cops here in roanoke have been known to be total Jerks & pick on kids who drive nice cars... oh well...

GwagenBabe,

Everytime I commute between the North East and the south on I-95; Virginia is the most stressfull part of the drive. The speed limit drops down to 55 and the State Troopers do a good job of enforcing that speed.

Last time I drove through your state there was a Virginia Ford Expedition with state seals on the doors and lights on top. I didn't know what it was so I kept the D at 55. Well some other fellow in a POS chevy flew past me and the State Expedition; must have been doing 80 (calibrated eye)! Anyway, the Expedition hit the lights and went after him.

Speeding tickets are such BS. OK, that's an over simplification but they're really starting to get me worked up. The whole idea behind them (in theory) is to make the roads safer. Okay, I agree excessive speed is dangerous and many do not have the judgment to select an appropriate speed on their own. BUT, the way they enforce the speed limit is what gets me. Speed traps are so selective. So many roads EVERYBODY drives over the speed limit, say 70km/h in a 50km/h zone. Only a few unlucky people will get pulled over though. This doesn't make the road safer, it simply causes you to have a large speed differential between those few folks who got stung, and everybody else. When I drove up to Toronto from Houston last August, several areas near large cities had cops driving up and down the grass median with their lights on. NOBODY was speeding cause they knew a cop was always nearby. The cops could quickly get to anyone broken down or any fender bender, and they had trailers set up with radar and a big display to remind you of your speed. This is effective and makes the roads safer. Instead, in most places, the cops will set up traps and pull over a very small percentage of the traffic. They seem more intent on catching you speeding rather than dissuading you from speeding in the first place. Here, we're not allowed detectors, but the cops are allowed to hide. They sit down in the median at night with all their lights off, effectively invisible, ready to pounce. Now, I know, I know the speed limit and should stick to it, but I STRONGLY believe it is far more dangerous to drive at a sgnificantly different speed than the majority of traffic than it is to drive 120km/h rather than 100km/h. If "they" truly wanted to make the roads safer, they'd require far more stringent driver training and testing and would retest drivers during their driving career. They would abolish Nova Scotia's famous decreasing radius turns on exit ramps, and they would construct roads with safety in mind.
Add to this the fact that the cops who enforce these laws are some of the worst drivers (I'm sure they're skilled but spending the day behind the wheel breeds all sorts of bad driving habits and it is a rare sight to see a cop use a signal, stop at a stop sign, drive the speed limit, stop at crosswalks, etc) and it really burns me to see someone pulled over. Especially as they've been jacking up the fines big time. I'm in second year university and have enough trouble earning tuition and paying for books, I can't afford $300 just for being singled out from a group of 30 cars for doing 15% over the posted limit on a divided highway. ARGH!!!

Anyway, sorry for the rant, I needed to vent. We can now return to the beautiful Camille and her almost as desirable automobiles.

Posted on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 - 10:15 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Damn Mr. Forbes! That was a rant indeed.

Since I have purchased the D, I have accepted that I drive a brick and usually set the cruise control around the posted limit (except when I am in a Rover Convoy). On I-95, everyone knows about the "enforcement zone" in the Emporia, Virginia area. Those Troopers are crafty at parking out of sight in the tree line.

On the other hand, what if Law Enforcement did not hand out tickets? I think those roads would be a bit unsafe to drive. Think about it, Bo and Luke Duke tearing ass up and down the road in an unsafe manner and an unsafe vehicle.

Posted on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 - 10:17 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Oh yeah, that reminds me of a funny story (well, more scary than funny). Around here, all the ambulances have sat navigation and are monitored. They are not allowed to speed and are punished severely if the computer detects them driving over the limit. As I'm sure is the case in most cities, there are roads where although the limit is the same as regular city streets, the streets are big enough (usually divided) that people treat them more like econdary highways and drive faster. Say 80km/h instead of 50km/h. I mean EVERYBODY drives that fast and the cops won't even pull you over, it's just sort of an accepted unwritten speed limit. Anyway, now that the ambulances can't speed, it is not an uncommon occurance to see an ambulance going down the road, lights flashing and sirens blaring, with a huge string of traffic backed up behind them going down the road waiting for the ambulance to turn off so everyone can get back up to speed!!

Posted on Wednesday, May 15, 2002 - 10:21 am:   Edit Post Delete Post Print Post

Paul, I agree that some form of speed control is required but I think something like photo radar would be far more effective and fairer than cops hiding in the bushes.

I don't want to tear ass around like a maniac (OK, so sometimes I do ;-) but I think the limits need to be re-evaluated and enforcement needs to be set up for safety rather than for revenue.

Niall,

You know, they actually said on the radio (NPR here in NJ) that the police get a substantial part of their funds from tickets. Of course we all new that, but I didn't think it was public policy LOL!

Personally, I would like to see decent speed limits (80) on highways, so that I could keep my eyes ON THE ROAD and not in the mirror or past the nearest bush. 55 is just plain rediculous.

But 70 in a 35? Hm...... Camille its probably a good thing in the long run, even though you will hate me for saying so, because when I was your age I nearly killed myself by racing, several times. And what a waste that would be! :)

lets put some of this to rest. first, i am a police officer, well for a short time longer i have decided it is time for me to leave the J.O.B.. i have been doing this thankless work for over 12 years in agencies from the federal level down to small town cop. the current city i serve has a pop. of about 10k. it is true that some police dept (usually very small burgs) support themselves by writing tickets. these departments will write you for any lil infraction, not just speed. that in itself is a sad witness and should not (even tho it does) reflect on police officer in general. most of us dont have the time to chase taillights so traffic enforcement is not high on mine or most police officers list of things to do. now in reference to speed enforcement alone...alot of speeding tickets could be halted if you slowed your dumb ass's down. now i realize thats a bit heady for most but thats just the fact. you speed, you get caught, dont blame it on the police or the laws. its YOUR fault, ok! the cop didnt whisper or send some mental message to you telling you to go fast. you made that choice so live with it. i dont always agree that speed limits are reasonable for the area that they are in but its the law. now for those who travel, when you leave home and travel a thousand or so miles away you will come across road surfaces you are not to familiar with. it is possible speed limits in those areas are restricted for a great number of reasons, these could be school zones, factory in and outs, and residential areas. these limits in velocity are there for SAFETYS SAKE more than to trap you into giving out some cash. again D O N T S P E E D and you wont get pulled over. thats simiple, right? now this next point is going to be a hard one to swallow. MOST AMERICANS CANT DRIVE WORTH A F@*K! i take many many many MV crash reports because people dont think, they are busy on cell phones, with the kids in the back seat, and the CD player and tend to have their heads so far up their ass that they lose touch with reality and run into somebody. its not really their fault, WE are just that way. Paul makes a good point, if the enforcement inst there then chaos will prevail and every NASCAR, Forumla, roadracing wanna be will be warming up the "slicks" and leaving black donuts on each others door. now this sounds a bit unreal but think about it for a sec. if we arent out showing our colors then that guy next to you may just push you off in the median and into that happy sign telling you that you are speeding.

now for those who dont know this is national police memorial week, i know that police officers are not on most of your christmas mailing lists, but unlike every other special interest group which gets a month or two to celbrate themselves but thats another issue, take the time to thank a police officer for being there. you will never know when the time may come when the only thing standing between you and a large number of bad things that could happen, is a police officer. the work is long and hard on both body and soul, and when the people you try to serve....well anyways, now i have vented and maybe offended but hey you will get over it.

have a nice day!
Officer M.K. Watson

M.K., I think you misunderstood me. More likely my rant was so ramblng and disjointed that it was impossible to follow. Let me try to clarify.

I totally have respect for the Police. I think cops are generaly great people who put up with a lot for little or no thanks. of course like all groups there are bad apples (like the one who jokingly pulled his gun on me when I was ~6)

I also think speed enforcment is important, I just think it needs to be done differently. I really don't think that the current method of using speed traps and pulling over a small percentage of drivers speeding and hitting them with a big fine makes the streets safer. It's like fishing with a jig versus fishing with a net. It really burns me to see someone get a ticket when everywhere I've been, the cops drive just like the cabbies do. I think better training and testing will do more. Also, saying I should just slow my dumb ass down is a coppout. I can't control the speed of all the other drivers on the road and if I'm in a 70mph zone and everyone else is doing 80, I'm sure as hell going to do 80 too. It is way safer. In fact, Young Drivers of Canada, probably the most respected defensive driving schools in the country, actually teaches students to drive with the flow of traffic rather than to religiously follow the speed limits.

When you say that most (North) Americans can't drive, you are totally correct. The total bone head moves I see people pull everyday are unreal. When I lived in Fiji, one of my best friends was Belgian. He could not fathom how we could have a speed limit of only 100km/h. It just left him dumbfounded, especially for such a large country. I had to explain to him how the cars people drive here, and the way they drive, leave them so removed from the road that they simply can't safely drive much faster. I Europe, I believe something like 90% of cars have manual trannies, versus ~90% automatics in the US. An no, the US does not have worse traffic, people are simply too lazy to be involved in driving a car. I strongly feel that the testing/education process for new drivers needs to be upgraded big time and that regular retesting needs to be put into place.

Carl, a friend of mine in Quebec regularly does better than 160km/h in his Disco on the Trans Canada. Not sure what that is in mph but it's gotta be over 80.

Oh, and M.K, just to further clarify, I don't hold this opinion because I've recieved lots of tickets. I've only ever been pulled over once and I was very polite and accepted that I was speeding and the Mountie even gave me a break. I was mad at myself for speeding but not him (I was doing ~127km/h in a 100km/h zone in no traffic). BTW, damn those lights are intimidating when you know they're for you ;-)

M. K. Watson (sir)

Some of what you say is right. But how can anyone put a speed limit of 55 on some highways, when EVERYONE drives at 75? If indeed you were to actually drive at 55, you would be a major road hazard, with people coming up fast behind you and swerving all over the place to avoid you LOL!

The reason is this: If they get you for doing 75, they can say you were doing 20 above the limit, which sounds bad, so they (and the insurance) can fuck you over big time with fines. That's all there is to it - the gas shortage is no longer a problem as far as I can see!

Have a nice day

Dean

niall and dean you two are so right when it comes to the "prevailing speed". yes if everyone is going 80 mph and you are doing the posted speed limit of lets call 65 mph, you are the hazard not the others. yes speed limits in most states are a bit uh,,,,stupid, but when you think about it and giving the reason already stated it has to be so. one note of interest, the feds have more to do with the speed limits than the actual states, something to do with insurance companies whining about payouts and various auto clubs knowing the in the lower 48 the real driving skills (yes police officer can be included in this) is not where it should be. i am a firm believer in moving to limiting operators license ages, camille this will hurt, but the largest number of crashes, where speed is a factor is among new drivers. sad but true, more kids are killed due to inexperence and speed than ant other MV crash cause. another funny note there are a large number of drug trafficers caught on the interstates because they speed. i have no idea why but load a couple few kilos of coke (cocaine) in a car and for some reason the driver will speed and then they get caught. funny as hell! the end result is the same, its the law, and until its changed then you have to atleast attempt to stay within a reasonable reach of that limit.

now as far as "selective enforcement" of speed limits and how speed traps apply. there is a few places you can go here in the US of A and run into real speed traps. they scare me, these are the places where the cop has the i have the gun and badge illness. as years have passed these zones are growing fewer because we (cops) have becomed more accountable to our actions. small town, real small towns should be watched more closely than the interstates for these fellas. they tend to still use mayors court and the funds obtained from fines go directly into the cities checking account. so if its a small town SLOW DOWN. if you get pulled over dont be an ass and question the police officer right to stop you. here in the US of A the drivers license is a PRIVELEGE not a RIGHT. when you sign for that license you take on an implied contract to obey the traffic laws and if you violate them, well then you get "skinned" as we call it.
i guess the real problem is if the speed limit is 65 there is always going to be someone who will do 85 thinking that this is a safe speed, maybe even several somebodies, so the arguement is made to make the speed limit 85, then the drivers who was speeding earlier will think 105 is ok. see my point here. then you have a large number of motorist cranking it up to speeds over 100 mph and that changes the whole dynamics of the vehicles handling characteristics change. not every car on the road can safely travel at this speed. to test this go out and check your own tire pressure. is it at the best pressure or somewhere in between and if it is how often do you check them and if you are like me only when i air down then whats to say that you neighbor checks his proior to making a low attitude fly by down the interstate. now do you see.

one last thing and then we can start talking camille into lifint the g-wagen. police officers for the most part are like everybody else, we do as little as we can get away with during our tour of duty. anytime you speed you make me work. i write the ticket i need to spend a hour prep the citation for court writing a statement of fact and then getting over to the court and then coming in for court, we dont likes that. (this does not apply to the road nazis aka as state patrol officers they live for that shit) so its not that you are being picked out of a crowd, you have done something to draw my attention to YOU and the results are a traffic stop. now speaking for myself i rarely issue a citation for traffic offesenives. i beleive that a stern warning goes further than hitting someone wallet (please dont mistake my kindness for weakness) to date i have not been disappointed in this appraoched. there are departments that require officers to write tickets, lets make this clear they, we, have no QUOTAS, we are allowed to write as many tickets as we want. so lets put that dead horse to bed.

so until the driver and his car become one and it can be shown that everyone on the raod can behave and play nice the limits have to be there and there has to be someone to refree the roadways.

And for the record, Niall, I was refering to Dean's truck...he wants to do 80, but the waitors on the roof slow him down.

I'm with Mr Racing slicks (carl) on this one. Mike, all you say is right, but lets get back to the main thread (*Camille:)).

So *Camille, do you ever get muddy? With all those GWags? I sure hope so:) Post up a picture here or in the photo gallery section (I'm SURE Ho will make and exception for you!)

PS any idea why your site is down so much?

her stickers are on the way.....and she is getting enough to cover her rear window i am sure.

:)

ps: as a side note i believe PA is the only state left where local PD cannot use radar......only VASCAR. local politicians still think the speed traps you are talking about Mike exist. BS of course and the local PD are not happy of course. makes it damn hard to catch people and accurately.

Still nobody working today I see. Man oh Man, how does the time fly when you have all this D-Web stuff to read all day. However, you guys are really bringing down the place with this speeding junk. I already feel jinxed after reading those "book" length posts. Knock on wood, I had better not get a ticket now on the way home! :)

At any rate, good to see there is a bonus of some sort to living in PA.

M.K., I agree with you that a warning is likely to be just as effective. In fact, I really think that if fines were dropped to say $5 but enforcement was stepped way up, you'd see an improvment. Actually, I think the ultimate solution would be a warning, but over your squadcar megaphone. Some really loud sarcastic comments on a busy downtown road would get people's attention ;-)

Its only felony evading if they catch you :)

Since I have had rovers it has never been an issue, though the disco will hit triple digits if pushed

As far as the stickers each hummer owner is given three and is OBLIGATED to give them out if he or she is recovered by a non hummer vehicle.

i am glad i got those NATO's and 265/75 tires. hard to get the rolling turd over 75-80. and i am glad about that too. cruises nicely at 65 mph.
i know all about felony evading. tried to ditch a local cop in my '85 maxima when i was 17 and eventually hid in a driveway with the lights out. lets just say it was not a good night once that spot light hit the back of my head. :)

See they caught you.

First thing you do is turn off the lights. I also has a switch on my brake lights to go dark.

Had an unreadable plate (rust)

Head onto the indian rez doing 3 digits. No more local authority only the troopers can get you there and the drunken indians shot at the trooper cars.

yeah they did. two of us were racing our J**ps against each other and i was the lucky one the local cop took after. i did turn the lights off and start weaving around a residential neighborhood. i was too far from any highway. eventually backed into someones driveway and just waited. eventually he found us and lite me up. was not cool.
happened again in NJ along 22 near Plainfield. was at a drive up at a White Castle acting pretty stupid and had just come from a local club. officer was walking in front of me to his cruiser and once to his car and as i was leaving he lit me up. since he was in a seperate parking lot he was not easily accessible to me. so i bolted down 22 with my foot to the floor of a well tuned VW and dumped my car in a neighborhood and was on foot for hours. ending up in someones back yard eating burgers for quite some time. got away that time though.
again.....i would not consider this again. in my youth (like many of you) i was not always making sound judgements.

:)

ps: switch for the brake lights. damn. very nice. i was and tried to be careful about that. taking turns wide with no application of brakes is hard.
