Hope this is the end to a lousy year - I had something bad happen today - driving down the road and all of a sudden the truck pulled to the right - then carried on going with no problems - I thought. Pulling in at home I noticed a strange noise - after giving the underside a visual once over - I got my first clue - both swivels are no longer chrome and shiny. I jacked it up and on the passanger side it looks as though either the bearings are gone or worse I have hub problems.

Both Swivels are a really dark grey matte - and on the passanger side it got hot enough to melt the plastic cap on the hub - ulp. I can't figure out why there was no noise whatsoever until it must of been too late

Any thoughts ?

Jeff

The only thing I can think of that would affect both swivels at once would be no oil at all in either.

No use just speculating though - tear into one side at a time and see what you find. I violent pull to one side may have been a CV saying bye-bye, but it sounds like other issues also if stuff is getting that hot - again, coming back to possibly no lube in swivel balls.

Let us know after you tear 'em apart.

Its looking like the CV let go - but I've never seen one go like this - no warning grinds or anything. Still have to pull it apart but after taking a look at the axle diagram this has to be the most logical thing. Big sigh of relief - Northeast British parts has them for $152 each. I'll let you know how my rebuild goes.

Finally got it stripped down - it's the wheel bearings - unfortunately when the inner bearing went it really went - the bearing cage shattered and it has welded the inner bearings to the spindle hub. It took me less than an hour to strip it down (bet the local LR dealer would of charged 3 hours for it)

Trip to Northeast British to get some parts :-(

Jeff

Same thing happen to me. I had to use a torch and a chisle to get off the old bearing. Then I spent some quality time with a file and my dremel tool to smooth out all the ridges left behind.

Same thing recently happened to my 95'D1.
On I-96. At night. With the wife and kiddies. Anyways....after getting a 50 mile tow (thx. GOD for AAA Plus)I was able dig out the shattered front driver side bearings and smooth out the stub axel w/emery cloth and a lot of time...so far so good. While I was in bearing replacement state of mind I replaced the other front side...and then a few days later the passenger rear bearing blew. This time only 5 miles from home. Chewed up the stub axel preettty good. Found a nice stub axel at the local junk yard for $40. I'm changing the other rear side bearings tomorrow. I'm getting my wheel bearing mojo workin'. Others on Dweb posted to me that if you replace one corner you might as well replace them all especially if your running on orginals or a high mileage set. Get a top grade syntetic grease and most the useful tool I found was a 2 1/8" hub nut socket. Less chance of damaging the stub axel treads when pulling off the nuts. Good luck to ya.
