I need some advice on this one.
Check engine light on. Checked codes, Misfires on cylinders 1 & 8. Took to dealer who said it needed a valve job. They happily did it for $2,300 (imagine that). Picked it up from dealer, 2 days later check engine light on again. Thinking it might be bad plugs/wires, I ordered new Magnacore wires and Bosch plugs. Installed new stuff, erased codes, turned light off. Two days later light on, checked codes - Misfires on cylinders 1 & 8. I dont know where to go from here. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Take it back to the dealer - they diagnosed the misfire and recommended the valve job - since they were the ones that obviously misdiagnosed it then they should diagnose it correctly free of charge

Every time I hear about misfires now, I think of a bad mass airflow sensor (I'm having one replaced on my Audi, for $$$$). Has anyone checked that?

I had misfire with a '97 Disco and it was bad plug wires.

Tell us the name of the dealer so we can be aware of their ignorance and poor service. Take it bck and leave it with them and politely demand a loaner car.

I had misfires as well - valve job - the errors never returned though - take it back to that dealer.

Oh yea, originally i was out of town - misfire code but that dealer only replaced the plug wire. Luckily it did it again - i took it to another dealer and they did the valve job. All under warranty but i was @ 45K so didn't have much to spare.

Sounds like coil pack. Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think 1 and 8 are on the same coil.

If Ron is correct about 1 and 8 being connected to the same coil pack, then I don't think there is any excuse for the dealer. The people who work there are not very good at what they do for a living. Either that or they are dishonest.

Ron, Do you know how much it would cost to have the coil pack replaced/repaired? Is it a hard job?
I think I'll take it back to the dealer to have it dignosed. It does seem like they were a bit anxious to do the valve job. I just hate dealing with the dealership. Its not close to home, and I feel like everytime I walk in, I'm going to end up spending the big bucks.
All additional help would be appreciated.
Oh, by the way, The dealer is Aristocrat Motors in K.C.

I am not defending dealers (they have been very good for my business!), but there is a possibility that they took for granted their original diagnosis because they have seen so many of that failure. Also, 6 and 1 are one coil, 5 and 8 on another. Those two coils are next to each other, but cyls 1 and 8 are not.
I have seen the ring on the flywheel (not the ring gear) get slightly damaged or shifted which makes it difficult for the engine to keep track of all of tehcylinders, and there is a relearn process for the engine to relearn top dead on cylinder #1. Whew. I hope this helps! I would certainly ask for more diagnosis on their part,(at their expense) before resorting to other means of satisfaction
