Some of you may know of our starter issues and the problems it caused us this past year out on the trails. Well, I came across a company called British Starters over on the east coast. They are selling what they call a high torque gear reduction starter. WOW!@! The starter cost me $215 delivered for a brand new (not rebuilt) starter. It is one beefy piece of equipment. I installed it the very next day and what a difference. The car starts with authority now. I am not affiliated with that company in any way but I can tell you to date I am very happy with the starter and would recommend British Starters to anyone who needs a new starter. And at the price they are selling, I would even recommend it just as a new unit to upgrade and keep your old as a spare. Did I mention they offer a lifetime warranty on the starter? What a deal! Check them out at http://www.britishstarters.com See you out there! |

Aha. Mine is starting to act up and was reading the shop manual on how to replace it and does not seem hard. Did you run into any problems or was it straight forward? |

long story.....goes on for about a year. 1. i hit a mud hole and the truck stalled, when i tried to crank it over, i heard a terrible noise. pinion was bent and when i cranked it, busted off the cast iron housing and pieces lodged in the flywheel housing. it was Dec. 31, so we had the truck towed to nearest shop, and as to not ruin our 2 day later new yeras trip, we acce4pt a rebuilt starter. 2. after failing to put in a new starter and thinking the rebuilt would be suffiecient, we went to RR3 and the morning of first trail runs, truck was dead and couldnt get it turned over all weekend. that was the worst because we couldnt get the starter out. 3. got starter replaced again at a local shop where we were and acceptede the best/cheapest method of repair. the allen bolt was stripped, and we also removeld the right side exhaut manifold to get more leverage to remove bolt. no luck. 4. pismo beach, we deicide to stay extra days, the morning after everyone else leaves, truck wont start, bang ti a few times and it starts, so we pack and drive staright home. only to find out that the last time, they put it another rebuilt and sold as "new". i should have also mentioned that in between, prior to big bear, we took the truck to a family "friend" sort of, and he said he fixed it when in fact all he did was take it apart and clean it. but the the biggest problem out on the trail, besides it not starting, its after all the hammer bangs that got it started (it stopped accepting the hammer method after a while), we were in the mountains and the allen bolts stripped making it impossible to remove the starter with conventional tools that most carry in the truck. so on the big bear run, i had them replace the allen botls with hex haeds, i ahvent had a problem since. so now, with the new bolts, and the starter here, i was able to install it in less than 1 hour. i took the last starter we got back to napa and they replaced with a "new" rebuilt starter. so the truck has the high torque gear reduction starter and it is awesome. i also will keep that rebuilt in the truck as a spare just in case we, or anyone else, ever has a problem. as for replacing, definitely let the truck cool down, all i can say is OUCH!...then you will need a swivel head ratchet and different sixe extensions to get at the bolts cleanly. you will alsio need an 8mm Hex socket? like an allen key but a socket. that should do the trick. when replacing, i used a small amount of loctite blue on the bolts. anyway, call up martin at British Starters and get oen from him, they are great. half the price of regular starter and bigger and beefier and brand new!i expect this starter to last for the life of the truck now. i was mistaken on the warranty though, it is 1 year guarantee and lifetime limited labor, whatever that means. but they are great guys over there and very helpful. |
