This weekend as i was putting my new ome springs and shocks on that i bought from EE, i saw the steering stabilizer behind the axle. THen i just remembered seeing a lot of disco's with new steering stabilizers that are relocated in front of the axle. The stabilizer on my disco is still stock and has been on for 93,000 miles, do i need to change these too? and what does the relocation to the front of the axle help with?

Yes you need a new one. Moving it gets it out of harms way. You can get a relocation kit for about $75, got mine from SG.

if it's not leaking just leave it alone. If your worried about hitting stuff, get skid plates.
heres mine...got 'em in front too.

thats pretty nice armor. My steering stabilizer was cashed at 44k I think you could tell a difference if you replaced it.

a stabilizer isn't as needed as many believe. If all is well you won't notice it gone. Well it'll be easier to steer without the hydro but it'll track as straight and vib. free as new.

Thanks, they came stock on the TReK Disco's.
Here's a place that has them listed, i've never used these guys so i'm not reccommending them.

Peter,

I just saw them on the Rovers North Site at:
http://catalog.roversnorth.com/catalog/pdfs/RRD2003barn_p35.pdf

I was wondering if they were any good.

Lewis: What do you think of them? WOuld you have bought them if they didn't come with the truck?

Other than the price...:-)
They have takin a pretty good beating here. I've dropped the whole weight of the TReK down on the trans skid and just scuffed it. The diff skids have been drug over a bunch of stuff and the front end skids have been getting a regular beating as I learn where the low spots are. The TReK just became my dedicated trail rig after selling my Jeep so i've been playing on harder trails with it.
But back to the Q, Yea, I'd buy them again knowing how well they've held up.

I like Rovers North, they are great people to deal with. I didn't see a front axle guard for ACE equipped DII's, but I have one.
I have mixed thoughts on the yellow finish though...kinda too 'bling-bling' for me. Mine will probably get sprayed black when the weather warms up.

Interestingly enough, it appears that the Land Rover skid plates are the exact same as Lewis'. Have a look under my rig here: http://houstonlandroverclub.com/photo_bill_diff.html

Though... you said they came stock on the TReK Disco's; that may explain it...

Unforatunately they are relatively the same price from Land Rover.

Bill - Land Rover uses Southdown guards for their vehicles hence the similarity so if you want LR guards, you can just go directly to Southdown or a Southdown distributor and get them and not have to pay the dealer markups.

Hi,

Has anyone had experience with the Rock Ware Disco Steering Stabilizer Relocation Kit or Offset Tie Rod?

Given the number of Tie Rods and steering stabilizers that I have seen bent, these seem like a worthwhile investment.

Then again, it could be a better investment to put that money into skid plates and rock sliders.

Any thoughts?

Victor

I'm a skid plate fan. They should be an early investment, IMHO.
But then, there are a lot of rocks around here.

ive heard a lot of mixed reviews on wether or not we need a steering stabilizer..ive been running without one for almost a year now with no real complaints..ive also upgraded to heavy duty track rods which may have a bit to do with it..anyway ive taken the truck on several offroad trips and havent experienced any weird steering problem...can someone please enlighten me as to why i would want to put one back on...given that i have no problems now..

FYI - Rockware relocation kit is crap - the bracket that goes around the stock drag link bends very easily. Better off with RTE drag link + their relocation bracket.

If you want to keep your stock drag link, Steve of RTE can make you a relo bracket that will fit the stock drag link.

Just my .02- I swore up and down a few months back that the steering stabalizer wasnt needed. I've had alot of 4x4s, mostly spring-over lifted Samurais (5...) and have always removed them, kinda like sway bars, just not needed and not the point of a 4x4. Anyhow, with the D1 (95), when I went from 2.5" to 4.5" inches of lift (and to 33s), I got a narly steering shake that really felt like a bad wheel bearing. Anyhow, this created the first time I ever took my D1 to a shop, took it twice, 2 different places, to replace a wheel bearing. Both refused, said they were fine. Finally, the 3d mentioned that my steering stabilizer was missing. Out of desperation, I put it back on, and walla, it stopped the violent steering shakes! Never would have imagined that would do so much.

you are just putting a band aid on a problem, not taking the problem away. You probably don't have enough castor.
The wobble will come back.
I had the same experance with my rock buggy on 37" MTR's, I lengthened the lower front control arms.

Like, in a couple of days?

Great looking TReK, and dog too. Any other Disco owners in Moab? I've seen a series running around town on my trips there that looked "local", but no other Rovers.

Moab is one of the most beautiful places in the country - IMO:-)

The blue one with the very cool worn paint? It's very cool (he won't sale it to me....) Theres a green DI that stays outside of Pagan's, It's lfted and racks, etc. but I've never seen it dirty. There's mine, and my wifes SE, but every time I see a cool one and chase 'em down I discover that they are just visiting.
...It is getting kinda warm today:-)
