Does anyone have the blue prints of a safety device's roof rack for a DII with duel sunroofs? Has anyone made a roof rack for their DII? I was thinking about making one. It would be a nice money saver.

Why don't you call Safety Devices and ask them for the blue prints. If you're going to steal their design at least call them up and fuck them over to their face.

calm down Greg....A tubular roof rack, they didn't invent it. This is a TECH section, much cooler to build something than to buy. Nothing wrong with asking direction.

Yes, Lewis but he asked specifically for the "Safety Devices" blue prints not blue prints to some generic tubular rack that he may want to build. I think Greg's response was appropriate.

Anyone have the blueprints for a Ferrari 355 GTS? I'd like to build one. I'm not picky; any of these three models would be fine.

Thanx.

Look guys,
I'm extremely sorry about the diction in that statement. NO, I do not specifically want safety devices blue prints, I was wanting the dimensions for building a roof rack similar to safety devices look. I DO NOT want their "blue prints" considering they are copywritten. I'm in the process of learning how the weld and thought that making a roof rack would be cost-efficient, and a great way to practice this new skill, and give me greater appreciation for my Disco. I'm extremely sorry for leading some of you into believing I wanted the exact blue prints of safety devices roof rack. I hope that this does not affect answers to questions that I may have about my Discovery in the future.

Don't worry 'bout it David! A roof rack is a great thing to make with new welding skills. The first project I did many years ago after welding school was a rack for a Jeep( well a cart for the welder was first). It went in the bed of the tub, the tire rode below. It was made with a lot of booger welds but I was so proud. I still have the rack in the back yard holding firewood.
I made my rack with square tubing, that wouldn't look good on a Disco. Get a tube bender, or get a friend with one. A chop saw, and some tubing and get to it. A few years from now you'll look back at it and think it looks like crap but it just might still be around....
Keep asking anything ya need,
Lewis

Hey thanks Lewis,
I was thinking about using electrical conduit to make a rack. It comes with the preformed right angles so I wouldn't have to worry about bending the tubing, although I do like the look of a rack sort of "flowing" with the roof line. What I really wanted was to see if anyone had made their own rack, and if they had any tips or pointers for doing such a task. As you can tell I'm not the best at putting thoughts down on paper, haha, and I appreciate all of you guys looking out for someone who would be wanting to cheat another person, trust me I would have chewed their ass out too. Well anyway, I hope that ya'll still will help me with my "adventure" of building a roof rack for my DII.

Merry Christmas,
Davis

(Sarcasm on)

Get used to it Davis, even though your intentions were quite innocent, you're always guilty around here first...makes for a great place to ask questions.

davis, start out by doing something simple like this. this is actually from a RR, but the style is good. Just measure the distance both ways gutter to gutter and windshield top to rear gutter and subtract a few inches in each direction, chalk it out on the garage floor and start bending and burning rods...

Sounds good,
About the mounts, what is the best way to secure them to the gutters.

Davis:

I'd have to say the best way is to use a full length piece of stock along the entire length of the rain gutter.

Most roof racks have feet. There are typically 3 or 4 feet on each side of the vehicle. The load from the rack is transferred from the roof rack into the feet then to the rain gutter. I'm sure there is nothing wrong with this design; I mean, let's face it--it's worked perfectly for many people for many years.

But, if I were makin my own rack, I would use a design similar to the Hannibal. While I personnally do not like the look of the Hannibal rack, it is damned well-made (it's just damned ugly--looks like a plumbers truck).

Check out this picture: http://www.hannibalusa.com/images/roofracks/LR-Discovery-II/1.jpg

See how the load is transferred from the legs down to the long piece of metal running the full length of the gutter? I think that is a superior design. The load is distributed more evenly along the length of the rain gutter.

I'd like to see Safety Devices do this with thier design.

After that, you will need some sort of clips. You get a pretty good look at the Hannibal clip in this picture: http://www.hannibalusa.com/images/roofracks/LR-Discovery-I/2.jpg and they look pretty easy to make.

Great points, Bill! And your right about the look of the Hannibal, it just don't look right without a tent up there.

Davis,

If you want to make it out of conduit as you mentioned, it could potentially look like this:

http://www.discoweb.org/deanbrown/Dscf0147.jpg

Its Peter Blatt's, quite possibly the most efficient (fuel-wise) rack ever made, and probably the only green one too!

Send him an email, I'm sure he can point you in the right direction if you want to go down that path.

The full piece of metal running down the gutter seems to be the most efficient way for weight distribution. Definitly less stress per square inch on the gutter. But about how much can the gutter usually hold? Now on the Hannibal it looks like the "hook" is put through the gutter and is attached to the bolt to hold it down. I'm not sure if thats how it's done, but that's how it looks in the picture. It seems to be a pretty good way to mount the roof rack. I like the Hannibal mount system with the Safety Devices roof "flow" design. Style combined with strength. I'm just a newb when it comes to metal working and working on the Disco, but I know I can fabricate something, it may not be the greatest, but hey, practice makes perfect.

You can indeed make a roof rack from elec conduit, and if you go with a full length support for the rack you will be able to carry more weight up there that you SHOULD! Never load and drive with over 1oo lbs up there, as is the rack will weigh 60 or more lbs! To bend conduit is easy! the benders are only a few dollars and will save you alot of time welding all the 90s on that you bought at an exaggerated price, a bundle of 10/10' 1/2 conduit is only about 15.00 bucks! I made mine as low as possible to save me on gas mileage, I have a d1 WITH 100K+ MILES, 2" LIFT, 235/85/16 AND SO ON, I still get 16/17 mpg on highway, I drive alot and having sonething low was essential, as well as being able to carry plywood/ drywall/2x4 ect, so here's two pics for you, I will be making a new one in the spring, there is alot i've learned from making this one.
Peter
Good luck in whatever design you decide on!!!!

i dissagree with the last caller about the amount of weight on the roofrack.

if you drive smart you can haul several hundred pounds up there.
