Hola troops: Hey, does anyone know what the stud size is on Hella 4Ks? I saw on another D2 group where someone was asking about securing them to his rig. I know IPF makes these locking nuts for 10 and 12mm studs.
If I wasn't a complete shit this year, odds are in my favor that Santa will bring me three new Hellas, but I would like to "lock" them down. I know, I know, this isn't going to stop someone who really wants them, but it is better than nothing. Since I do not have them in my possession, I cannot measure the size. Are they either 10 or 12mm? What else are folks doing to "secure" them to their rigs? Thanks. -- Bill Mallin 2001 Disco II AKA Sherman Web Dood Houston Land Rover Club http://www.houstonlandroverclub.com |

Bill, I just got a set and they look like 10mm if I remember correctly, but I don't think 12. However, the mount if fastened to the light with a thumb screw that adjusts the angle. With an alan key or pair of plyers they would be off in a second Victor |

Bill, If you can tell me what to look at, where it is, and what you need measured, I will go try to figure it out for you. Jamie |

Bill, I just pulled out the install instructions. There is no mention of "stud size". However, perhaps this will help. Under install tools required it says: Drill with 3mm, 10mm, 11mm dia. bits |

Victor: Based on Jamie's measurements, I bet you are right. The 11mm drill bit would be for a 10mm stud (Thanks Jamie); though, it's only speculation on my part; Santa still has them in his bag. I'll watch this thread to see if anyone has anything else to add, but I guess if it comes down to it, I'll figure out some means of securing them one way or another and share it with everyone. Bill, I was thinking about it after my post, and had a thought. I recall that 2-way radio manufacturers and closed-circuit TV mounts have locking studs that are about 1/4" in diameter, or about the same as the adjustment nuts that go on the bottom of the lamp. Additionally, the adjustment "bolt" goes into a nut that is inside the light. If you were to substitute the knurled nut on the outside with something that doesn't have a gripping surface (a round head bumper bolt) that might do the trick, but it would make adjusting them a bit of a pain. You would have to tighten the nut on the inside with the light disassembled. Just my $0.02 Victor |
